염상섭의 ｢미망인｣에 나타난 전후 상과 집

국문 초록

이 글에서는 염상섭의 장편소설 ｢미망인｣에 나타난 6.25 휴전 직후 일상적 세계의 소설적 형상화 양상을 ‘집’이라는 소재를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이는 ‘전쟁미망인’이라는 키워드를 중심으로 한 여러 선행 연구의 접근 방식에서 벗어나 ｢미망인｣을 염상섭 후기 문학의 흐름 속에서 이해해보고자 하는 시도이다. 한 작가가 여러 작품에서 특정 소재를 다룸에 있어서 일정한 태도와 관점을 유지하리라는 가정하에서 ｢미망인｣과 비슷한 시기에 발표된 염상섭의 여러 작품과의 비교 작업을 수행하였다. 그 결과 ｢미망인｣ 한 작품에만 집중하였을 때는 잘 드러나지 않았던 다음과 같은 몇 가지 의미들을 발견할 수 있었다. ｢미망인｣에서 주인공의 생활에 관한 묘사는 전쟁미망인의 특수성보다는 환도 직후 서울 시민의 일상이라는 보편성에 더 많이 기대고 있었으며, 특히 집 없는 설움이 강조된다. 이는 명신이가 집을 구하기 위해 이사를 반복하는 내용으로 이어지며, 이러한 집 구하기는 주요 갈등 및 플롯 전개와 밀접하게 연결된다. 이에 작품 전체의 서사를 주인공 명신이의 집 구하기로 파악할 수 있었다. 한편 ｢미망인｣에서는 집이 인물성격화에도 중요한 요소로 작용함을 확인하였다. 집을 가진 다른 과부들과는 달리 명신이 모녀에게는 집이 없고, 금선이나 창규 같은 부정적 인물은 집을 미끼로 명신을 유혹하고 있어서 집을 가진 자와 못 가진 자가 선명한 대조를 이룬다. 염상섭의 여러 작품에서는 집이 없다는 사실이 양심을 지키며 산다는 자존심의 근거가 되기도 하는데, ｢미망인｣의 집 구하기 서사 또한 명신이와 홍식이가 ‘타락’의 유혹에 맞서 자존심을 지키는 도덕적 대결에 관한 이야기가 된다. 한편 과부가 등장하는 염상섭의 다른 작품과 비교하였을 때 ｢미망인｣은 이례적으로 해피엔딩을 맞이한다. 이는 과부가 타락하기 쉬운 환경과 조건을 활용하면서도, ‘도움’을 주는 인물을 배치함으로써 발생한 차이이다. 개인적인 선의에 바탕으로 둔 도움으로 어려움을 극복한다는 ｢미망인｣의 결말에는 새 질서와 윤리에 희망을 걸어보는 작가의 간절한 소망이 담겨 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the shape of the everyday world after the Korean War, which appeared in Yeom Sangseop’s novel “Widows,” focusing on the subject of ‘home.’ This is an attempt to understand this work in the flow of Yeom’s later literary world, contrary to the trend of existing research focused on the keyword war widow. This paper established that a novelist would maintain a certain attitude and perspective when dealing with a particular subject in several works, and based on that assumption, worked to compare “Widows” to Yeom’s other works. As a result, several facts were confirmed as follows. In “Widows,” the description of the main character’s life relied more on the universality of Seoul citizens’ daily lives after the capital relocation than the specificity of the war widow, and in particular, the homeless sorrow that the main character experiences is emphasized. This leads to Myung Shin moving repeatedly to find home, and this home finding develops into the main plot. Therefore, this work can be understood as a story about finding home. In addition, home is used as an important element in characterization. Unlike other widows, Myung-shin does not have a home, and negative characters such as Geum-seon and Chang-gyu seduce Myung-shin with their house as a bait, creating a sharp contrast between those who have a house and those who do not have a house. In Yeom’s other works, the fact that someone does not have home is the basis for his pride in living with a conscience. Similarly in this work, the narrative of finding home develops into a story about a moral confrontation in which Myung-shin and Hong-sik fight the temptation of corruption and protects their pride. Meanwhile, this work has a happy ending, which is unusual compared to Yeom’s other works. Like other works, this work utilizes the environment and conditions surrounding the widow, but the difference is created by the appearance of a person who helps the main character. The ending of the work, which uses help based on personal goodwill to overcome difficulties, contains Yeom’s earnest wish to put hope in a new order and ethics.
