국문 초록

이 논문은 기존 연구에서 소설 ｢갯마을｣과 영화 <갯마을>의 주요 공간인 갯마을을 전근대적이고 유토피아적인 고향으로 상징화되고 있다는 점에 의문을 제기한다. 갯마을에는 근대적 요소가 소설과 영화 모두에서 부분적으로 확인되고 있으며, 해순이 귀환하는 갯마을 공동체가 제국과 자본의 논리에 종속될 가능성이 큰 곳임이 감지되고 있기 때문이다. 이 논문은 소설과 영화에서 갯마을이 재현하고 있는 표상들을 검토하는 한편, 작품의 배경지인 기장 학리(소설)와 이천리(영화)의 관계를 통해 갯마을 텍스트가 내포한 공간적 의미의 균열 지점을 새롭게 발견해보고자 했다. 갯마을 서사는 대체로 전근대적인 요소들이 압도적으로 재현되고 있다. 소설과 영화는 공간적 배경만을 초점화 함으로써 전근대적 생활 습속을 노출시키려 하였는데, 소설과 영화의 배경지가 다른 이유도 이 때문이다. 의도적으로 시간적 배경을 은폐하고 공간적 배경만을 강조함으로써 독자나 관객들로 하여금 해순을 따라 노스탤지어를 향유하게 하여 당대 독자나 관객들이 가진 고향과 전통에의 회귀를 환상적으로 충족시켜 주고자 한 것이 갯마을 서사의 목적이다. 그러나 기존의 전근대적 생활 습속에서 유토피아로 인식되던 공간이 조금씩 균열되고 있음을 소설과 영화는 의도하지 않게 보여준다. 해순이 회귀한 갯마을은 전근대적 공동체로 남아 있지만, 조금씩 침노하는 제국과 자본의 힘 앞에 무기력하게 노출되어 있는 공간이기 때문이다. 이곳은 유토피아적인 공동체가 아니라 되레 전근대적인 생활 습속의 종언을 암시하는 징조로서의 공간이 되고 있는 것이다. 공간 인식의 균열 징조는 소설에서 자연발생적인 전근대 공간의 직핍한 재현으로 이해된다. 그러나 영화는 소설의 균열을 지우고 전통적 이미지에 집중함으로써, 민족의 시원을 상상하는 당대 문화 민족주의 기획과 맥을 같이 하게 된다.

영문 초록

This paper raises questions about the fact that Seaside Village, the main space of the novel “Seaside Village” and the film The Seaside Village, is symbolized as a pre-modern and utopian hometown in previous studies. The modern elements of Seaside Village are partially confirmed in both novel and film. And it is being sensed that the Seaside Village community to which Hae-soon returns is highly likely to be subordinated to the logic of empire and capital. This thesis examines the symbols reproduced by Seaside Village in novel and film. And attempts to discover a new crack point in the spatial meaning of the Seaside Village text through the relationship between Gijang Hak-ri(novel) and Yicheon-ri(film), which are the backgrounds of the work. As a whole, the narrative of Seaside Village overwhelmingly represented pre-modern elements as a whole. The background space of the novel and the film is different. The reason is that novel and film tried to show only pre-modern lifestyles by reproducing different spatial backgrounds. The works intentionally hide the temporal background and emphasize only the spatial background. Thus, it induces readers and audiences to enjoy nostalgia. The narrative of Seaside Village had the purpose of fantastically satisfying the hometown and tradition to the reader or audience. However, novel and film unintentionally show that the traditional utopian space is being cracked. Even if the Seaside Village where Hae-soon returned remains a pre-modern community, this is because this space is helpless in the face of the power of the empire and capital. Therefore, this is not a utopian space. Rather, it is a space as a sign of the end of pre-modern lifestyle. The crack of spatial perception in the novel is a direct representation of a spontaneously occurring pre-modern space. However, in the film, it is a cultural nationalism project to erase the cracks in space and focus on the traditional image.
