‘반공만화’에서 ‘민중만화’로의 도정

국문 초록

본고는 허영만의 <오! 한강>(1987)이 갖는 작품 내적 특질의 변모 양상을 살펴보고, 이러한 변모 과정 및 특징, 요인을 작품이 발표되었던 1980년대 한국사회 및 한국만화계의 흐름 변화와의 연관 속에서 고찰하여 그 문화사적 의의를 밝히고자 한 시도이다. 만화 <오! 한강>은 “국내 최초의 이데올로기 만화”라는 평가와 동시에 ‘세련된 형태의 반공물’이라는 비판적 평가를 받은 바 있는 문제작이다. 본고는 이러한 상반된 평가가 가능할 수 있었던 텍스트 내적 요인을 총 3부로 구성된 장편서사만화의 연대기적 구조에서 찾았다. 작품의 1~2부와 3부에서 드러나는 각각의 특징들은 내용과 형식 양 측면에서 작품의 전반부와 후반부가 일정한 차이를 지니고 있음을 보여준다. 작품의 전반부가 기존의 반공만화와는 다른 진보적 시각을 내포하고 있으되 큰 틀에서 반공만화라는 혐의를 벗어날 수 없었던 반면, 후반부는 1987년 6월 항쟁 이후 사회 전반의 민주화 흐름 속에서 동시대의 보편적 가치를 객관적으로 제시한 ‘이념만화’로, 독자들이 공감할 수 있는 정치적 현실감을 확보한 ‘민중만화’로 그 성격이 변모한다. 본고는 이러한 작품 내적 특질의 변모가 1980년대 초 시작된 민중만화운동과 그로 인한 주류 대중만화계의 흐름 변화와 일정한 상관성이 있다고 보았다. 이상에서 살펴본 허영만의 <오! 한강>(1987)이 갖는 작품 내적 특질의 변모 양상은 1980년대 중후반 질적으로 성숙해가고 있던 한국 대중만화계의 한 단면을 보여준다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 상업주의에 기반한 흥미 위주의 통속만화들이 양산되었던 1980년대 한국 대중만화계의 현실 속에서 만화 <오! 한강>은 정치·역사 소재의 진중한 만화가 대중들에게도 큰 반향을 일으킬 수 있다는 사실을 보여준 첫 작품으로서 한국만화가 질적으로 도약하는 주요한 국면을 보여주고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is an attempt to examine the transformation of the inner characteristics of the comic book Oh! Han River(1987) and reveal the significance of cultural history by considering the changes in the flow of Korean society and the Korean comics industry in the 1980s when the work was published. Oh! Han River was critically evaluated as a refined form of anti-communism comics, while being considered the first ideological comic book in Korea. We found the text- intrinsic factors that could have been used for these conflicting assessments in a chronicle structure consisting of three parts. Each feature revealed in parts 1&2 and part 3 of the work shows a significant difference between the first and second half of the work in terms of content and form. While the first half of the work implies a progressive view that is different from the existing anti-communism comics, it has not been able to escape the charge of anti-communism comics in a big way. The second half is a ‘Ideological Comics’ that objectively presented the universal value of the contemporary era amid the democratic trend in society as a whole after the June 1987 uprising, and its character is transformed into a ‘People(Minjung) Comics’ that secured a political reality that readers can sympathize with. This paper noted that the variation of the internal characteristics of this work has a certain relationship with the People(Minjung) Comics Movement that started in the early 1980s and the consequent changes in the trend of mainstream popular comics. From the above, we saw the transformation of the inner characteristics of Heo Young-man’s Oh! Han River(1987) is meaningful in that it shows a side of the Korea’s pop comic book industry, which was maturing in the mid- to late 1980s. In the 1980s, when popular comics based on commercialism were mass produced, Oh! Han River is the first work to show that serious political and historical comic book can also resonate with the public, showing a qualitative leap in Korean comics industry.
