국문 초록

김말봉의 소설 『파도에 부치는 노래』는 1951년 7월 창간된 잡지 『희망』에 17회 동안 연재된 작품이다. 식민지 시기 하와이 노동이민과 사진신부의 이야기를 다룬 이 소설은 반공 친미주의로 알려진 김말봉의 1950년대 소설의 전사(前史) 역할을 한다. 대중소설에 능한 김말봉답게, 소설의 큰 틀은 아름답고 순결한 봉금의 일대기를 다룬다. 선한 봉금과 그의 남편이 선주민과 악한 조선 남성들에 의해 위험에 처하고, 이를 극복하면서 건강한 가족을 만드는 서사다. 봉금은 강간 위기에도 용감하게 문제를 해결하며 첫사랑의 유혹에도 절개를 지킨다. 김말봉은 봉금을 통해 하와이 이주의 죽음정치적 상황을 보여준다. 노동이민자인 김영섭은 혹독한 노동에 시달리다 장애인이 되고, 사진신부로 온 여성들은 돈으로 거래되며 팔린다. 이러한 상황을 해결하는 것은 봉금의 도덕주의적 태도다. 봉금이 만드는 가족을 통해, 하와이 생활이 안정되는 것이다. 그런데 이 소설에서 흥미로운 점은 해방 이후 미국과 일본을 재현하는 방식이다. 김말봉은 하와이를 경계지대로 설정한다. 주인공을 위협하는 사람들은 하와이의 선주민이며, 소설에서는 백인이 거의 등장하지 않는다. 이상적 남성 인물인 조영규가 미국 본토에 건너가서야 ‘진짜 미국인’이 등장한다. 선량한 미국인들은 조영규의 공부를 도와주고 조영규에게 적극적으로 호감을 표시한다. 봉금의 아들 성주는 일본인 여자친구와 함께 로즈앤젤레스로 이주한다. 이러한 설정은 해방과 한국전쟁을 거치며 강화된 미국 중심의 동아시아 질서를 보여준다. 남한과 일본은 더 이상 과거의 적국이 아니라 파트너가 되어야 하며 애니와 영규처럼 한미공조를 이루어야 하는 것이다. 조선과 일본, 조선과 미국은 사랑을 통해 연대하며, 그 핵심에는 조선의 미래를 담지한 남성 청년이 있다. 김말봉이 하와이 사진신부를 통해 이야기하고 싶었던 것은, 해방 이후 달라진 냉전 질서를 배태한 젠더 정치학이었던 셈이다.

영문 초록

Kim Mal-bong’s novel Songs to the Wave was published for 17 consecutive episodes in the magazine Hope, which was published from July 1951. The novel, which tells the story of a Hawaiian labor immigrant and a ‘picture bride’ during the colonial period, serves as a prehistorical story of Kim Mal-bong’s 1950s novel known as anti-communism pro-Americanism. Like Kim Mal-bong, well-known as a popular novel writer, the novel’s big frame deals with a beautiful and innocent biography of the woman. The novel consists of a melodrama and an epic story in which her husband is endangered by Hawaiian natives and evil Joseon men, and while overcoming it, they creates a healthy family. Bong-geum is a Joseon woman who bravely solves problems despite the rape crisis and keeps her integrity despite the temptation of her first love. Kim Mal-bong shows that immigration to Hawaii is in a necropolitical situation. Kim Young-seop, a labor immigrant, eventually becomes disabled in an accident after suffering from severe labor, and women who come as picture brides are traded and sold in money. It is the true heart of Bong-geum and Young-seop that can overcome this situation. In contrast, people who indulge in gambling and sex are presented. They are punished for death in the novel. But what’s interesting about this novel is the way it reproduces Hawaii, or the United States. Kim Mal-bong sets Hawaii as a contact zone. Those who threaten the protagonist are the natives of Hawaii, and few white people appear in the novel. Only when Cho Young-kyu moves to the States, a “real American” appears. Good people help Cho Young-kyu with his studies and actively express their affection for him. In addition, Bong-geum’s good son Seong-ju moves to Los Angeles with his Japanese girlfriend. These settings illustrate the situation in South Korea, the United States, and Japan in the 1950s. In the order of East Asia created by the U.S., South Korea and Japan must reconcile in past enemies, and cooperate with the U.S. like Annie and Young-kyu.
