국문 초록

해운기업은 대표적인 경기수혜업종이다. 경기가 호황일 때는 정해진 일정에 화물을 싣고 운송해주는 단순한 서비스만 제공해도 수요가 있었다. 그러나 최근과 같은 경기 침체기에는 선박 등 고정자산에 투입되는 운영비를 회수하지 못할 정도로 경영에 어려움을 겪고 있기 때문에 외부경기변화에 민감하게 반응하여 상황에 맞는 경영전략을 수립해야만 하는 상황이다. 본 연구는 해운기업을 컨테이너, 벌크, 탱커선사로 구분하여 각각 해운기업의 재무자료를 기반으로 다양한 성과측정을 위해 운영성과 및 효율성을 분석하였다. 해운기업 유형에 따른 특징으로 첫째, 컨테이너선사는 타 선종보다 경기변화에 따른 기업성과의 변동성이 상대적으로 높은 것으로 분석됐다. 선사의 수익원인 해상운임 중 벌크 및 탱커선사는 운임의 변동성이 장기운송계약을 통해 절충(trade-off)되는 효과가 있지만 컨테이너선사는 해운시황의 변동성이 반영된 공표된 요율(tariff)에 따라 운임이 결정되어 경기 변동성에 상대적으로 취약하다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 기업의 성과를 측정하는 주체의 시각에 따라 성과는 다르게 나타날 수 있기 때문에 동태적인 분석이 필수적이다.

영문 초록

Purpose : This study divided shipping companies into container, bulk, and tanker shipping companies, and analyzed operational performance and efficiency to measure various performance based on the financial data of each shipping company. Research design, data, methodology : The shipping industry is a typically cyclical market. When the economy is thriving, shipping companies may grow their business offering relatively simple logistics services. However, in the recent recession, shipping companies have suffered significantly and to such an extent that revenues have barely covered operating costs and as a result they have been forced to develop new business strategies. Results :Characteristics according to the type of shipping company. First, container shipping companies are analyzed to have relatively higher volatility in corporate performance due to economic changes than other ship types. Conclusions : Among marine freight rates, which are a source of revenue for shipping companies, bulk and tanker shipping companies have the effect of trade-off through long-term shipping contracts, but container shipping companies change their rates according to published rates reflecting the volatility of the shipping market. Thus, it can be said that it is relatively vulnerable to economic volatility. Second, a dynamic analysis is essential because performance may appear differently depending on the perspective of the subject who measures the company s performance.
