전상국의 ｢동행｣에 구현된 공간 배치 전략과 연민의식

국문 초록

이 연구는 전상국의 ｢동행｣에 나타난 공간 배치 전략과 연민의식을 살피고자 하는 목적에서 출발하였다. 전상국 소설에 등장하는 주인공들은 대부분 고통의 감정을 표출하고 있으며, 이 고통은 고통 그 자체로 머무는 것이 아니라 혐오, 자기처벌을 거쳐 연민의식으로 확장되는 양상으로 드러나는 경우가 많고, 또한 작가가 직조해 낸 공간 구조와 이 연민의식이 얽혀서 소설적 의미망을 형성하고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 작품 속에 드러난 공간 배치 전략과 연민의 감정이 어떻게 연결되며 어떤 과정을 거쳐 그 의미를 형성하는지 파악한 다음, 이것이 작가의식을 어떤 방식으로 드러내는지 규명하기 위해 루드비히의 공간 이론과 고통을 핵심 감정으로 삼는 누스바움의 연민론을 방법론으로 적용하였다. ｢동행｣은 눈길을 따라 ‘개울→산비탈→고갯마루→내리막길(갈림길)’로 공간 이동이 이루어지는데, 고갯마루를 정점에 두고 상승과 하강 곡선을 이루며 동행하는 여정에서 두 인물의 고통이 발현되며 그 고통을 통해 공감하고 연민에 이르는 과정이 드러나고 있다. 육체적 고통이 전제된 ‘개울’과 ‘산비탈’의 공간 배치는 형사의 관찰자적 시선을 자연스럽게 형성하고 비좁고 상승하는 조율된 공간을 형성하여 주인공의 고통을 발현시키고 강화하고 있다. 고갯마루에서는 억구의 고통에 대한 형사의 공감이 수치심과 자기처벌의 의미를 지닌 ‘광’과 ‘담’의 상징적 공간 배치를 통해 형성되고 있다. 내리막길은 눈이 내리는 설정과 맞물려 고통을 전제한 ‘개울-산비탈’과 대조적인 의미를 형성하면서 연민의식이 실현되는 공간으로 배치되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 결국 주인공들의 목적지인 ‘와야리’까지 향해 나아가는 눈길의 공간 배치는 상승과 하강의 대립을 전제하면서 넓은 곳에서 점차 좁아지는 형상을 보이다가 다시 넓어지는 특성을 보이면서 인물들의 고통을 발현하고, 자기처벌을 공유하도록 만들면서 눈의 의미망을 형성하여 공감을 통해 연민의식에 이르는 또 다른 ‘길’을 만들고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

This thesis started with the purpose of examining the spatial arrangement strategy and compassion in Jeon Sang-gu’s ｢Companion｣. Most of the protagonists in Jeon Sang-guk’s novels express emotions of pain, and this pain does not remain in the pain itself, but rather expands through disgust and self-pity to a sense of compassion. This is because the spatial structure and this sense of compassion are intertwined to form a novel meaning network. In this study, Ludwig’s space theory and suffering are the key to understand how the composition and compassion of space revealed in the work are connected and through what process they form their meaning, and to analyze how this concretely reveals the artist s consciousness. Nussbaum’s compassion theory was applied as a methodology. In ｢Companion｣, the space moves from ‘Stream → Mountain slope → Pass crest → Downhill(crossroads)’. The process of becoming empathetic and compassionate through the pain is being revealed. The spatial arrangement of the ‘stream’ and ‘mountain slope’, which presupposes physical pain, naturally forms the detective’s observer’s gaze and creates a narrow and ascending coordinated space to express and reinforce the suffering of the protagonist. At the top of the hill, the detective’s sympathy for the suffering of the scourge is being formed through the symbolic spatial arrangement of ‘gwang’ and ‘dam’, which have the meaning of shame and self-punishment. It can be seen that the downhill road is arranged as a space where a sense of compassion is realized while forming a contrasting meaning with the ‘stream-mountain slope’ that rises to the top of the pass in conjunction with the setting of snow. In the end, the spatial arrangement of the eyes leading to the main character’s destination, ‘waya-ri’, assumes the confrontation between ascending and descending, showing a gradually narrowing shape in a wide place and then widening again, expressing the suffering of the characters, causing pain and self-esteem. While sharing punishment, they are creating another ‘path’ to compassion through empathy. In this way, Jeon Sang-guk suggests that, above all else, compassion is required to save human beings who are vulnerable to suffering through ｢Companion｣. In other words, human beings, who are fundamentally vulnerable to each other’s pain, can move forward with compassion by sharing each other s pain, revealing the author’s consciousness that pain and wounds can be healed through compassion.
