치매 서사의 신빙성 없는 화자와 이야기 정체성

국문 초록

본 논의는 박완서의 ｢참을 수 없는 비밀｣과 김영하의 『살인자의 기억법』을 중심으로 초점화자의 ‘신빙성 없음’이 각각의 치매 서사에서 구현되는 양상을 살피고 신빙성 없는 화자의 이야기 정체성을 형성하는 내포작가의 역할을 밝히고자 한 것이다. 두 작품 모두 신빙성 없는 화자인 치매 환자의 기억이 소멸해 가는 중심에 시간의 착종이 존재한다. ｢참을 수 없는 비밀｣의 초점화자 하영의 서사에서, 시간 착종은 치매 노인인 하영이 생각하는 시간(기억 시간)과 실제의 시간 사이에서 일어난다. 『살인자의 기억법』의 시간 착종은 동일한 시간대에서 ‘나’ 김병수가 실제와 망상을 구분하지 못하는 것으로 나타난다. 이 서사 구조 속에서 치매 화자는 자신이 어떤 인격이나 태도를 가진 존재인지 인지하지 못한다. 자신이 한 서술을 자신마저 확신할 수 없는 혼란의 상태로 서사가 마무리되는데, 그래서 독자는 애초부터 서사를 이끌 수 없는 치매 화자에 의한 서술을 기획한 ‘내포작가’의 존재를 다시 인식하게 된다. 이런 점에서 정체성을 상실한 신빙성 없는 화자의 정체성 복구는 결국 내포작가의 몫이며, 그 자체가 신빙성 없는 화자를 내세운 내포 작가의 기획이다. 두 작품의 초점화자 하영과 김병수의 이야기 정체성은 각각 ‘예고 없는 불행에 대한 불안감 극복을 위한 노력’과 ‘공소시효 없는 죄책감’으로 파악될 수 있는데, 이러한 신빙성 없는 치매 환자들의 정체성 역시 공동 저자 역할을 하는 내포작가의 기획을 통해서 형성된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the aspects of the focalizer’s ‘unreliability’ in each dementia narratives of the novels ｢Unbearable Secrets｣ by Park Wan-suh and 『Memoir of a murderer』 by Kim Young-ha, and identify the role of the implied author to form the narrative identity of the unreliable narrator. In both works, the confusion of time exists at the center of the disappearance of the memory of dementia patients, who are unreliable speakers. In the narrative of Ha-yeong, the focalizer of ｢Unbearable Secrets｣, the confusion of time occurs between the time she, an elderly dementia patient, thinks and the actual time. The confusion of time in 『Memoir of a murderer』 appears as the aspect of being unable to distinguish between reality and delusion in the same time zone. In this narrative structure, the dementia speakers are unaware of what kind of personality or attitude they have. The narrative ends in a state of confusion in which even she or he is not sure of her or his own narrative, so the reader re-recognizes the existence of the who designed the narrative by dementia speakers who cannot lead the narrative from the off. In this regard, the restoration of the identity of the unreliable narrator. who has lost her or his identity is ultimately up to the implied author, and it is the planning of him who put forward the unreliable narrator. The narrative identities of Ha-yeong and Kim Byeong-su, the focus speakers of the two works, can be understood as ‘efforts to overcome anxiety about unwarned misfortune’ and ‘guilty conscience without statute of limitations’, and these identity of the incredible dementia patient is also formed through the planning of the implied author.
