1960년대 한국과 오키나와 소설에 나타난 미국 패권주의의 인식과 비판

국문 초록

이 논문은 남정현과 오시로 다쓰히로의 소설에서 미국의 군사적 패권주의가 어떻게 인식되고 있는가를 논의하고 있다. 남정현은 ｢분지｣에서 주한미군의 특권적 지위에 대해 질문하고 있다. 1960년대 중반의 한국에서 ‘미국의 본질’에 대해 묻는 것은 매우 어려운 일이었다. 한국전쟁 이후 미군은 한국에서 특권적 지위를 갖고 있었고, 한국의 박정희 정권은 그것을 자신의 반대세력을 탄압하기 위한 정치적 지렛대로 활용하고 있었다. 1960년대의 한국은 한일협정 체결과 베트남파병 문제로 시민저항이 최고조에 이르렀다. 한국인의 의지와 무관하게 진행되고 있던 이러한 사태의 배후에는 미국이 있었다는 것이 남정현의 생각이다. 그는 ｢분지｣에서 홍만수의 발언과 행동을 미국의 군사적 패권주의의 본질에 대해 질문한다. 그러나 설사 소설일지라도 미국의 본질에 대해 질문하는 것은 반공법 하의 한국에서 거대한 정치적 금기였다. ｢분지｣에서 홍만수가 미군의 부인을 강간한 결과, 펜타곤에 의한 핵공격에 직면하게 된다는 알레고리적 서사가 출현하는 것은 이러한 정치적 금기 때문이었다. 오시로 다쓰히로는 ｢칵테일 파티｣를 통해 미군점령체제 아래의 오키나와의 정치적 상황을 조명하고 있다. 남정현과 달리 오시로 다쓰히로의 소설은 리얼리즘의 기법으로 쓰여졌다. 이 소설에 등장하는 오키나와인, 일본인, 중국인, 미국인들 모두는 아시아 태평양 전쟁의 각기 다른 기억을 갖고 있다. 그 기억들은 지배와 종속, 침략과 희생, 점령과 복종과 같은 대립되는 가치로 인물들의 내면을 혼돈에 빠지게 만든다. 특히 주인공인 ‘나’는 중국침략의 ‘가해자’이면서, 미군 점령의 ‘피해자’로서의 내면적 분열에 시달리고 있다. 소설에서 주인공의 딸은 미군에 의해 강간당하지만, 그것을 법적으로 처벌할 수 있는 권한이 없는 오키나와의 현실이 날카롭게 드러난다. 주권도 시민권도 없는 오키나와의 현실이 첨예하게 부각되면서, 이 소설은 오키나와를 점령하고 있는 미국의 식민주의적 본질에 대해 질문한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses how U.S. military hegemony is perceived in the fictions of Nam Jung-hyun and Oshiro Tatsuhiro. Nam Jung-hyun is asking about the privileged status of the U.S. Forces Korea in “Land of Excrement”. It was very difficult to ask about the nature of America in Korea in the mid-1960s. After the Korean War, the U.S. military had a privileged position in Korea, and the Park Chung-hee administration in Korea was using it as a political leverage to oppress its opponents. In the mid-1960s, South Korea reached its peak due to the signing of the Korea-Japan Agreement and the dispatch of troops to Vietnam. Nam Jung-hyun believes that the U.S. was behind the ongoing situation regardless of the will of Koreans. He asks Hong Man-soo s remarks and actions in Land of Excellence about the nature of American military hegemony. However, even if it was a fiction, it was a huge political taboo in Korea under anti-communist law to ask questions about the nature of the United States. In “Land of Excrement”, Hong Man-soo s rape of the wife of the U.S. military resulted in the emergence of an allegorical narrative that he would face a nuclear attack by the Pentagon because of this political taboo. Oshiro Tatsuhiro is exploring the political situation in Okinawa under the U.S. military occupation system through “Cocktail Party”. Unlike Nam Jung-hyun, Oshiro Tatsuhiro s fiction was written as a method of realism. The Okinawans, Japanese, Chinese, and Americans in the novel all have different memories of the Asia-Pacific War. Those memories confuse the characters with conflicting values such as domination and subordination, invasion and sacrifice, occupation and obedience. In particular, the main character, “I” is the perpetrator of the Chinese invasion and suffers from internal divisions as a “victim” of the occupation of the U.S. military. In the fiction, the main character s daughter is raped by the U.S. military, but the reality of Okinawa, which is not legally authorized to punish it, is sharply revealed. With Okinawa s lack of sovereignty and citizenship sharply highlighted, the novel asks about the nature of the colonialism of the United States occupying Okinawa.
