디아스포라의 몸에 재현된 한국전쟁

국문 초록

본고는 한민족 디아스포라 문학으로서 이창래의 『생존자(The Surrendered)』가 한민족의 이산된 기억과 정체성, 세계문학으로서 보편성을 지녔다고 보며 한국전쟁의 기억이 담긴 디아스포라의 몸에 집중하고자 한다. 전쟁체험자가 신체 고통과 질병을 과거와 연결하여 받아들이면서 몸의 죽음으로 진정한 애도를 수행하여 주체성을 발휘했다고 보기 때문이다. 이때 몸은 존재의 언어로서 의식이 표현되는 결합의 장이다. 또한 단순한 체험과 달리 성찰이 더해져 삶의 지평을 확장하는 의미의 경험 주체이다. 한국전쟁의 피난길에서 죽어가는 동생을 지키지 못하고 살아남은 11살 준은 고아원에 가게 된다. 하지만 생존의식과 죄책감 때문에 채울 수 없는 허기 상태가 되어 폭식과 구토를 반복한다. 또 여성으로서 몸을 부정적으로 인식하여 타인의 시선을 견디지 못하고 폭력으로 대응한다. 그러다가 죄책감과 허기를 해소할 희망인 실비를 만나 그 몸성이 사라진다. 하지만 실비가 죽자 허기가 다시 되살아난다. 준은 고아원의 헥터를 따라 미국으로 건너가고 이후 정주의식 없이 살다가 암에 걸린다. 준은 종양을 동생이자 아들, 실비와 동일시하며 고통을 기꺼이 받아들인다. 스스로도 과거의 전쟁기억과 함께 자신의 몸 안에 거하는 것이다. 따라서 과거에 부정적으로 인식했던 것들을 여전히 거부하는 몸성을 갖는다. 죽음을 앞둔 준은 헥터를 찾아와 과거를 이야기한다. 그리고 공유하는 기억의 접점인 이탈리아에서 죽음을 맞고자 한다. 그곳은 고통을 처벌로서 받아들이던 자신의 죽음과 과거를 함께 애도할 수 있는 장소이다. 준은 삶과 죽음, 과거와 미래가 공존하는 몸으로 마지막을 맞는다. 『생존자(The Surrendered)』는 한국의 6월이라는 뜻을 가진 한준의 몸을 통해 전쟁으로 인한 고통의 실존을 기록한 것이다. 첫 장과 이어지는 마지막 장은, 전쟁의 보편을 의미하는 솔페리노에서 다시 한국전쟁의 장으로 회귀한다. 이를 통해 한민족 디아스포라의 기억서사를 전쟁 본질에 대한 성찰로 확장하고 있다.

영문 초록

Lee Chang-rae s The Surrendered has been studied as Korean diaspora literature with themes of the memory, identity and universality of the separated Korean people. In this essay I will focus on the body of a diasporic person containing the memories of the Korean War. This is because it is believed that the body showed its identity by performing true mourning with the death of the body while connecting physical pain and disease to the past. Here the body is the language of existence, which is the place of association in which consciousness is expressed. Unlike simple experiences, this is an addition of reflection to broaden the horizon of life. The 11-year-old June, who failed to protect his dying brother on the road south, goes to an orphanage, but she eats and vomits repeatedly due to hunger caused by the sense of survival and guilt. Also, as a woman, she can t stand other’s eyes and responds with violence because she recognizes her body negatively. Then, she meets Sylvie, wife of a pastor, who is likely to relieve her guilt and hunger as a family member and comrade. But Sylvie dies and Jun follows Hector to America. She gets cancer from living without a sense of settlement while trying to be completely alone. Jun is willing to accept the pain by identifying the tumor with her brother, son, and Sylvie. Since consciousness is revealed by the body, the attitude toward the past is for living together in one s body. Therefore, it becomes a body that rejects things that were perceived negatively in the past. June, hugging the past, finds Hector and talks about her memories. And in Solferino, Italy the contact point of shared memory, she begins her journey to die. It was a place of genuine mourning where one could mourn her death and past, which she accepted as punishment. Jun s indomitable will for the end and the relationship she formed during her journey serve as an opportunity for Hector to open a new path. In the final scene where death and life overlap to live like crazy, Jun s body means that the boundary between life and death disappears and the past and the future coexist. Han June s body, which means June in Korea, records the existence of pain. In addition, the first and last chapters, which mean the universality of war, return from Solferino to the Korean War and extend the Korean people s memory narrative to reflection on the nature of war.
