국문 초록

이 글은 이만도의 철학사상에 대해 검토한 것이다. 그동안의 연구가 그의 순국과 절의정신에 국한되어 있었던 터라 그 사상적 동인에는 소홀한 면이 없지 않았다. 물론 단편적인 문헌 자료로 인해 논의의 한계가 있긴 하지만 試論적으로라도 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 판단했다. 이만도는 퇴계학을 가학으로 계승하면서도 그 배움을 실천하는 데에 더욱 분발했다. 그 실천에는 ‘直’, 몸이 곧아야 하듯 마음도 곧게 해야 한다는 깨달음이 자리하며, 이는 마음공부의 중요성으로 연결된다. 그는 이황의 마음공부를 그대로 고수하여 감정이 발현되기 전인 마음 상태를 경으로 보존하는 ‘敬存’을 중요한 공부법으로 생각했다. 늘 마음의 집중과 각성 상태를 유지하는 데에 노력했던 것이다. 이러한 사상은 그의 위정척사론에서도 그대로 투영되었다. 동학당을 비롯해 당시에 연이은 국가적 혼란은 ‘邪術’로 인해 선왕의 오랜 법을 망치는 데에서 비롯되었다고 진단하여 ‘正學’을 바로 세움으로써 회복될 수 있다고 했다. 여기서 정학은 朱子學 내지 退溪學을 의미하며, 이는 결국 인간의 마음에 도덕성과 실천력이 되살아나 세상에 구현되기를 바랐던 것이다.

영문 초록

This article is aimed at reviewing the philosophy ideas of Yi, Man-do. His research has been limited to his dieting for one s country and faithful mind, so he has been negligent in his ideological causes. Of course, there is a limit to the discussion due to the fragmentary literature, but I think it is necessary to review it as an introductory. Yi, Man-do inherited Toegye s philosophy as a sadist, but worked harder to practice the learning. There is a realization in the practice that the mind must be straight as the body should be, which leads to the importance of mind study. He thought of ‘Self-Cultivation of Ching-Preservation’ as an important study method, which preserves the state of mind before emotion is revealed by sticking to the mind study of Yi and Huang. He always tried to keep his mind focused and awake. These ideas were also projected in his The Uijeong-Cheoksa Theory. The Donghak Group and other successive national turmoil at the time came from ruining the long-standing law of the late king due to ‘Sorcery’ and said it could be recovered by setting ‘Orthodoxy’ right. The word “Orthodoxy” here means Neo-Confucianism or Toegye s philosophy, which eventually hoped that morality and practice would be revived in the human mind and be implemented in the world.
