국문 초록

본 논문은 大韓協會에서 월간지로 간행한 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 漢詩를 통해 대한협회의 성격을 규명한 것이다. 애국계몽단체 大韓自强會의 후신인 대한협회에서는 1908년 4월 25일부터 1909년 3월 25일까지 통권 12호로 『대한협회회보』를 간행하였는데, 여기에는 문인 총 61명의 한시 123제가 게재되어 있다. 이러한 『대한협회회보』에는 과거 문인의 한시 57제와 애국계몽기 당시 생존해 있던 당대 문인의 한시 66제가 게재되어 있어 과거시와 당대시가 대략 절반가량씩 게재되어 있다. 기본적으로 애국계몽기 한시는 민족의 각성 촉구의 내용을 담고 있기 마련이다. 이에 따라 본 논문에서는 대한협회가 지향하는 의식 및 성향을 직간접적으로 드러낼 수 있는 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시의 일면을 사회 고발시, 憂國詩, 권면시, 여성 각성 촉구시, 국가에 대한 忠誠 鼓吹詩로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시는 국가는 개인의 단체이고, 개인은 국가의 구성원으로 생각하고 있음이 확인되었다. 이에 더해 개인보다는 국가에 더 주안점을 둔 본회의 설립 취지와 ‘생명재산의 보호’ 또는 ‘관민폐습의 교정’ 등 본회가 추구하는 강령에 부합하는 문제에 대한 해답을 제시하기 위해 한시가 게재된 것임도 확인되었다. 그동안 대한협회의 제2대 회장 金嘉鎭이 취임한 1908년 7월 이후부터 계몽운동 성격마저 후퇴하고 일진회와의 회합을 이루려는 것으로 인해 점차 노골적으로 친일화되어 갔다며 대한협회를 친일단체, 또는 애국과 친일의 성격을 아우르는 단체라는 논란이 있었다. 이러한 논란에 대해 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시를 통해서는 친일적 성격으로 해석할 빌미의 여지를 찾을 수 없었다. 이처럼 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시를 통해서 살펴본 대한협회의 행보는 친일과는 거리가 멀며, 김가진이 회장이 된 후에 간행된 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시를 살펴봐도 대한협회의 성격은 애국단체임에 틀림없었다. 그러므로 대한협회를 친일단체로 평가하는 것에 대해 좀 더 세밀한 재고가 이루어져야 하는 한편, 『대한협회회보』에 게재된 한시의 가치를 문학사적 입장에서 인정해주어야 마땅하다.

영문 초록

This paper is regarding the points of the Korean Association through the Korean poetries in Classical Chinese in the books 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 which is monthly publicated by Korean Association. Korean Association, as a successor of Daehan Jagang-hoe, the patriotic enlighten- ment group, published the 12 books of 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 from April 25th in 1908 to March 25th in 1909. It has 123 poetries written by 61 poems. The 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 published both of the past and contemporary poetries with 57 poetries of past poems and 66 of contemporary poems. The poetries in the period of patriotic enlightenment have basically the contents to awake ethnic consciousness. In this paper, the 123 Korean poetries in the publication are classified into the social accusation, the worries about the country, advice, female awakening and inspire loyalty to inside out the views of the Korean Association. As a result, it is confirmed that the Korean Association have thought that a country is a group of individuals, and the individuals are the members of the country. The Korean poetries had also been used to make focus on the country rather than individuals following the purport of the association like ‘The protection of the life and properties’ or ‘The corrections of the public abortions’. There was some argument that the Korean Association was a pro-Japanese group or a both patriotic and pro-Japanese group, insisting the patriotic features had been blurred and baldly bacame Japan friendly since the second chairman Ga-jin Kim inaugurated in July 1908. Despite the arguments, there was no reason to comprehend the poetries in the 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 as Japan friendly ones. As such, regardless of the chairman, the Korean Association s actions through the Korean poems published in the 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 are far from pro-Japanese. It must have been a patriotic organization if you look through the Korean poetries in the publication. Therefore, a more detailed reconsideration should be made for the hasty evaluation of the Korean Association as a pro-Japanese organization, while the value of the Korean poems published in the 『Bulletin of the Korean Association』 should be recognized from the perspective of literary history.
