국문 초록

본 연구는 자료포락분석(DEA)을 이용하여 경영효율성을 측정하고, 경영효율성이 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 검정하기 위해 수행되었다. 분석대상은 2002년부터 2012년까지 우리나라 유가증권시장에 상장된 기업 중 금융업을 제외한 12월말 결산법인이다. 경영효율성 평가를 위한 산출요소는 매출액을, 투입요소로는 매출원가, 판매관리비와 설비자산을 선택하였다. 경영효율성은 Charnes, Cooper, Rhodes(1978)에 의한 기술적효율성과 Banker, Charnes, Cooper(1984)의 순수효율성으로 나누어 측정하였다. 주요 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경영효율성이 미래 초과이익을 예측하는 정보로서 유용한지에 대해 Ohlson(1995) 모형을 이용하여 검정한 결과, 경영효율성은 미래 초과이익과 유의한 양(+)의 관련성이 있음을 발견하였다. 이로써 경영효율성 측정치가 미래 초과이익을 예측하는 선도지표가 될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 주식시장에서 투자자들이 의사결정을 하는데 경영효율성 정보가 활용되는지를 실증적으로 분석한 결과, 경영효율성은 주가에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 주식시장 참여자들이 경영효율성을 초과이익에 대한 예측정보로 인식하고 있으며, 주가에 반영하고 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this study is to examine whether the operational efficiency of a firm is informative about future residual earnings and stock price. In this study, we construct a quantitative non-financial indicator of operational efficiency using data envelopment analysis (DEA) based on a vector of firms’ inputs and output to estimate the relative efficiency of firms in the same industry. Empirical tests are conducted for non-financial firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange between 2002 and 2012 with fiscal years ending in December. Main results of our study are summarized as follows. The operational efficiency has additional predictive power to one-year ahead residual earnings beyond that of current period residual earnings. This result indicates that the operational efficiency play a role of leading indicator in predicting a firm’s future residual earnings. Adopting Ohlson (1995) valuation model, we find the operational efficiency generally has a positive influence on stock price, implying that investors recognize the informational value of the operational efficiency.
