국문 초록

본 연구는 인터넷을 예술적 목적으로 차용했던 초기 인터넷 예술 작품들을 분석하여 인터넷의 기술적 속성이 미학적 특성으로 발현되고 있음을 서술하는 동시에 현재의 포스트 인터넷 환경에서 나타나는 예술 흐름에서도 밀접한 연관 관계를 발견할 수 있음을 드러내는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 인터넷 아트의 주요한 3가지 속성을 서술하며 인터넷의 미학적 특성에 관하여 분석한다. 인터넷은 초기 군사적 목적으로 발명되었지만 이전 매체에서는 불가능했던 기술적 특성을 가지고 있었으며 예술가들은 이러한 인터넷의 기술적 특성을 기반으로 다양한 예술적 시도들을 수행하였다. 첫 번째로 TV와 전화기와 같은 이전 매체의 특성, 즉 연결성과 가상성이 어떻게 인터넷이라는 기술적 환경에서 특유의 연결성으로부터 예술적 행위의 단초가 될 수 있었는지를 살펴본다. 또한, 기존 발화 권력이 어떻게 인터넷을 통해 재구성될 수 있었는지를 두 번째의 특성으로 분석한다. 마지막으로 현재까지도 인터넷의 가장 큰 특성으로 간주되는 상호작용성으로부터 기존의 일방향적 예술 작품의 내러티브가 변경되는 측면을 다룬다. 이와 같은 특성들은 인터넷 환경에 익숙해진 현재의 상황에서도 여전히 유지되는 특성이자 포스트 인터넷 아트의 주요한 전제가 되는데, 이러한 특성들이 초기 인터넷 아트를 넘어 현재의 포스트 인터넷 아트에서도 어떠한 미학적 가치로 연결되는지를 분석하는 것도 본 논문의 주요한 목적 중의 하나이다. 이러한 분석을 통해 결론 부분에서는 인터넷 아트가 단일한 소통 체계를 다원화하여 민주적 접근 가능성을 선보였으며 현실 세계가 규정하는 정치적이고 자본주의적인 세계관에서 탈피하여 탈 중앙 집중적인 사회 구조에 대한 비판을 담고 있음을 서술한다. 이는 포스트 인터넷 환경이라 명명되는 동시대 예술 흐름에 있어서도 매우 밀접한 연관 관계를 갖고 있기 때문에 본 논문에서 중요한 논제로 다루어진다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze early Internet art pieces that borrowed the Internet for artistic purposes and describe its technical nature being expressed as an aesthetic characteristic, while simultaneously revealing that a close association can be found in art flows that appear in the current post-Internet environment. To this end, three main attributes of the Internet art are described and analyzed from the viewpoint that technical characteristics of the Internet are connected to its aesthetic characteristics. The Internet had technical features that were invented for early military purposes, and hence were unavailable in previous media. Artists attempted various performances based on these technical characteristics. First, we look at the characteristics of previous media such as TVs and telephones, that is, how connectivity and virtualization could have been the backbone of artistic behavior from the unique connectivity in the technical environment of the Internet. It also analyzes how existing firepower could be reconstructed over the Internet as a second characteristic. Finally, it examines the aspect of changing the narratives of existing one-way works of art in relation to interaction, which is still considered the greatest characteristic of the Internet. These characteristics remain a feature in place, even in the present circumstances of being accustomed to the Internet environment and a major premise of post-Internet art; one of the main purposes of this paper is to analyze which aesthetic values these properties connect to in today’s post-Internet art. From this analysis, the conclusion states that Internet art has diversified from a single communication system to showcase democratic access, and is critical of a central, focused social structure that deviates from political and capitalist worldviews defined by supporters of the same. This is an important topic in this paper as it is closely connected with contemporary art flow in, what is known as, the post-Internet environment.
