국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 「홍길동전」의 정체성 문제와 그것을 추진하는 동력으로서의 권력과 폭력 등에 주목하여 작품의 의미를 찾는데 있다. 이런 점에 대한 논의는 작품의 주지가 무엇인가를 찾는 것으로 일정한 의의를 지니고 해석하는 지평을 넓히는 데도 도움을 준다는 의의가 있다. 작품은 장소의 이동에 따라 정체성의 확인 과정을 중요한 요소로 간주하고 있다. 장소의 변화는 정체성의 과정을 두고 벌인 길동의 탐색과 모색의 과정과 일치한다. 가정에서는 길동이 서자라는 정체성에 묶여 있으나 이것에 대한 불만을 갖는 모습을 보이고 있다. 가정을 떠나 사회로 진출하는 데도 정체성은 중요한 요소로 작용하고 있다. 가정을 벗어나 국내사회에서는 정체성에 대한 다각적인 모색의 과정이 나타난다. 길동은 어떤 때는 가정을 벗어나면서 가졌던 신분적 위계에 따른 사회적 모순에 주목하며 어떤 때는 개인의 부귀영달에 주목한다. 이와 같이 정체성 탐색에 골몰하는 주인공의 형상은 작품의 전체적인 서사가 정체성 확인 과정으로 구성된 것임을 반증한다. 정체성의 확인 과정에는 길동의 권력에 대한 추구 욕망이 내적으로 자리하고 있으며 권력을 성취할 수단으로써 폭력이 외적으로 자리하고 있다. 권력을 추구하는 데에 활용할 수 있는 것으로 길동은 폭력에 대한 직접적인 행사에서 간접적으로 행사로, 비체계적인 행사에서 체계적인 행사 방법으로 동원하는 방식을 바꾸고 있다. 가정에서 사용하는 폭력은 단순히 직접적이고 현장적인 차원에서의 것이라면 국내 사회에서는 폭력은 다양성과 체계화를 위한 노력이 동반되어 여러 방법을 모색하는 형태를 띠고 있다. 해외에서의 폭력은 체계화된 형태의 최고 형태가 어떤 것인지를 보여주는 형태로 바뀌어 있다. 작품에서는 권력 의지와 폭력이 중요한 추동력으로 작용하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to find out the meaning of the work Hong Gil Dong jeon, focusing on the identity problem of Hong Gil Dong and on power and violence as the driving force behind it. This discussion is meaningful as it helps to broaden the horizon of finding and interpreting the meaning of the work. The work regards the identification process as an important factor as the “place” moves. The change of place coincides with the process of searching for Gildong through identity verification. In the family, Gildong is tied to the identity of a seoja but dissatisfied with it. Identity also plays an important role in leaving home and entering society. Outside the home, there is a multifaceted process of identity in society. Gildong pays attention to the social contradictions of the status hierarchy that exist outside the home, and sometimes to personal wealth. In this way, the figure of the protagonist who is concentrating on the search for identity disproves that the overall narrative of the work is composed of the identity verification process. In the process of verifying identity, Gil-dong’s desire for power is inward and violence is expressed outwardly as a means of achieving power. As a means of pursuing power, Gildong is changing the way it mobilizes from a direct event of violence to an indirect event and from an unstructured event to a systematic method of exercise. Whereas domestic violence is simply a direct and on-site exercise, it is a form of exploration of ways to accompany diversity and systemic efforts. Violence abroad has turned into a form that shows the best form of systemic effort. In the work, the will of power and violence act as important driving forces.
