미국 공립대학의 아너스 교육과 교양교육의 전인성

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 공립대학교들의 아너스 교육의 기원과 특징 및 실제 운영을 교양교육이 지향하는 전인성의 관점에서 살펴보고 이에 비추어 우리나라 대학들의 아너스 프로그램이 나가야 할 방향을 모색하고자 한다. 전통적으로 미국의 아너스 교육은 한 분야의 전문성에 치우치지 않는 전인적인 인재상을 추구해 왔다. 이른바 4차 산업혁명시대의 변화된 교육환경에서도 교양교육이 지향하는 전인교육은 여전히 유효하다고 할 수 있다. 교양교육은 4차 산업혁명시대에 필요한 역량 즉 비판적 사고, 의사소통 능력, 창조성, 리더십 등을 제공해 주기 때문에 더욱 중요해졌다. 아너스 교육은 이런 역량을 교육하는 효과적인 도구라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서 살펴본 버지니아 주립대학의 에콜스 스칼라 프로그램, 미시건 대학의 LSA 아너스 프로그램, 오스틴 대학의 플랜 2 프로그램과 럿거스 대학의 아너스 대학은 구체적인 실행에서는 차이를 보이지만 공통적으로 소규모의 세미나식 수업을 제공하고, 교수 및 학생들 상호간에 긴밀한 관계를 형성하도록 도와주며, 해외연수 및 봉사활동 등을 통해 학생들이 경험의 폭을 넓히도록 해준다. 우리나라 대학의 아너스 프로그램은 전인성을 교육하기보다 취업이나 해외연수 등 특정한 목적에 초점이 맞춰진 경우가 많다. 또한 우수한 학생들을 유치하기 위한 혜택 초점을 맞출 뿐 우수한 학생들을 교육하기 위한 아너스 전용의 프로그램과 교과목의 개발은 부족해 보인다. 아너스 교육은 교양교육을 바탕으로 전인성을 추구하는 체계적인 프로그램을 개발할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the origins and characteristics of honors programs offered by public universities in the United States. By examining how these programs aim to foster well-roundedness, this study tries to find guidance on how Korean universities should develop their honors programs. Traditionally, honors education in the U.S. has pursued well-roundedness rather than specialization in a particular field. Even with the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution, well-rounded education through liberal arts education remains relevant. In fact, currently, liberal arts education can be considered even more important because it provides crucial skills such as critical thinking, clear communication skills, creativity, and leadership. Honors education can be considered an effective tool for developing these abilities. This study examines the University of Virginia s Echols Scholars Program, the University of Michigan’s LSA Honors Program, the University of Texas’s Plan II Program, and Rutgers University’s Honors College. Even though these programs show differences in implementation, they all offer a wide variety of courses that use seminars, facilitate close relationships between professor and student, and broaden the students horizons through study abroad programs and community service. The honors programs in Korean universities tend to focus on specific goals such as employment or studying abroad rather than aiming for a well-rounded education. Moreover, while the programs offer enticing benefits to attract exceptional students, they are inadequate for further developing these students’ abilities. Therefore, honors programs should systematically incorporate liberal arts education in order to encourage well-roundedness.
