미디어매체를 이용한 영어 학습

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 영어를 배우는 학생들이 미디어매체를 통해 영어를 배울 때 얼마나 수업에 집중을 하고, 암기력을 향상시킬 수 있는지 실증적으로 살펴보는 것이다. 영어는 단순히 시험과 성적을 위한 학습이 아닌 실질적으로 사용할 수 있는 언어로 사용되어야 한다. 단순히 문장을 외우는 것이 아닌, 문장을 이해하고 대화를 하는 순간에 사용할 수 있는 영어를 학습해야 한다. 이렇게 영어를 활용하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 암기를 하는 것이 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 대학뿐만 아니라 초, 중, 고등학교에서도 암기는 일방적인 방식으로 이루어진다. 수업시간에 학습자의 능력과 흥미를 배제한 무조건적인 암기는 단시간 내에 외울 수 있는 장점은 있지만 수업이 끝난 후 학습자들이 곧 배운 것을 잊어버리기 쉬운 방법이다. 단순히 듣고 말하는 수업은 학생들의 흥미를 유발하기에는 부족하고 수업에 대한 집중도를 떨어뜨릴 수 있기 때문에 교재와 함께 적절한 미디어매체를 이용한다면 흥미 유발과 암기력을 높일 수 있다. 연구자는 S대학교에서 시행하고 있는 ‘전공실무 영어회화’과목의 수강자를 대상으로 학과의 특성에 맞춘 영어 수업을 미디어매체와 함께 수업했다. 전공과 관련한 영어를 배울때의 문제는 학습자들이 어려운 전공단어들을 어떻게 쉽게 외우고 오래 기억할 수 있는지에 있다. 연구자는 학생들에게 흥미를 제공하고 암기력을 향상시키기 위해 이미지와 함께 영어를 기억하도록 하는 방법을 선택했다. 문자보다 이미지는 강렬하게 학생들의 뇌리에 남을 것이고 이미지와 함께 기억한 언어는 장기 기억된다고 생각한다. 기존의 미디어매체 이용학습은 드라마와 영화에 나오는 대사를 보고 외우는 학습이었지만, 이 수업에서는 반대로 교재에 나오는 단어와 문장을 드라마에서 찾아내서 그 장면을 통해 학습을 하는 방법을 사용했다. 이미지를 통해 학생들의 뇌리에 강한 인상을 남기고 그 장면에서 사용한 언어 또한 오래 기억될 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 연상을 할 수 있는 이미지를 통해 수업을 진행했다. 글속의 문자적 정보와 이와 관련된 지식을 통해 전체의미를 맞추어 가는 과정이 연상과정이다. 영화, 드라마에 나오는 이미지를 떠올리면서 어휘를 기억한다면 영어 학습자의 기억 능력을 향상시킬 수 있다고 생각한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to review practically how intensively students concentrate their studies and how to improve their memory ability when studying English with media. English should be used in a real situation, not only for exam and grade. It should not memorize sentence but understand and use it for conversation. In that sense, it is important to memorize for its practical use. Unfortunately, memorization is irrationally done in elementary, junior high, and high school. A straightforward memorization in class which is not concerned about learner s ability and interest has a merit in that it can be done in a short period; however, it is a way that students will forget easily what they memorize right after the class. Also, if English class is done simply by listening and speaking, it will not be a good way to motivate students to study English hard and to keep them concentrating on what they are learning. So, it will be the best way to use textbooks along with its relevant media such as movie and drama to improve learner s curiosity and memory capacity. The researcher proceeded the English class with media fitting to the adjusted program of the department in S university for those taking the class called English conversation in practice of their major. One of the issues that students learn English relating to their major is how to memorize the difficult terminology and words which they encounter in studying their major easily and keep them long in their memory. The researcher chose the method in which students would memorize English words with their images in order to arouse their interest and improve their memory ability. Image will remain more clearly in their brain than letter so that the words memorized with their images will be kept in their brain. The existing method of learning English by using media is to learn English by memorizing the scripts used in drama and movie but in this class students should find words and sentences written in their textbooks from dramas or movies and to learn them along with the scenes that they are used. In that way, students will remember the words and expressions used in each scene for a long time as teachers can implant their images in student s brain. With that purpose in mind they led their classes with images which students can associate the words and expressions with. It is a process of associating its literal information within letter and its relevant knowledge with its image to find out the meaning of it as a whole. Therefore, this paper positions that if students try to associate words and expressions with their images shown in movie and drama, they can improve their memory ability definitely.
