‘신화’와 ‘전설’ 콘텐츠의 소설적 변용과 의미화 전략

국문 초록

이 글은 「신화를 삼킨 섬」에는 신화와 전설을 비롯한 각종 설화가 작품 서사 전개과정에서, 또 주제형성 과정에서 중요 요소로 작동하고 있다고 보고, 이 작품에서 신화와 전설이 어떻게 소설적으로 변용되고 의미화 되는지에 주목하였다. 이 작품은 프롤로그와 에필로그에 ‘아기장수 설화’가 전반부와 후반부로 나뉘어 배치되어 있으며, 그 사이에 ‘1~18’까지의 번호를 단 서사가 전개되고 있는데 그 서사 속에 제주 아기장수 설화와 제주 서사무가가 제시되고 있다. 전설에 해당 하는 아기장수 설화는 한국에서 기록, 전승되는 보편적인 아기장수 설화와 제주도 에서만 알려진 아기장수 설화가 대비되고 있다. 한편 신화에 해당하는 제주도서 사무가는 서사 내에서 세 번에 걸쳐 벌어지는 굿판에서 굿 제차의 형태로 구술성이 강조되어 제시되는데, 뱀당신 본풀이, 초감제 본풀이, 그리고 바리데기 무가까지 세 서사무가를 통해 제주 신화가 제시되고 있다. 일반적인 아기장수 설화의 인물 유형은 유사성에 의한 대체에 의해 중심 서사에서 일어나는 대립 구조 속의 인물들에 연결되면서 지배자와 피지배자, 가해자와 피해자, 선과 악의 윤리적 양항을 대립시키는 기능을 한다. 그러나 이러한 측면은 제주도 아기장수 설화를 통해 전복된다. 곧 제주 섬사람들은 김통정, 김방경 모두 아기장수 설화에 나오는 ‘가짜 구세주’일 뿐이라 믿으면서, 권력의 그 어느 편에도 서지 않고 제3의 도민층으로 살면서 자신들을 ‘생존단위의 공동운명체의 백성’으 로 여긴다. 이러한 섬사람들의 지향점을 이끌어내는 것이 중심 서사에 제시된 세 가지 서사 무가와 관련된 신화와 그 신화를 구현하는 심방들이다. 이 작품에서 제주 서사무가에 바탕을 둔 제주 신화는 권력 집단의 대립과 그 대립에 의한 무고한 희생을 극복할 수 있는 하나의 대안으로 제시되고 있다. 신과 인간과 자연, 이승과 저승, 내세와 현세가 하나가 되어 함께 어우러져 사는 제주 신화의 세계가 바로 그것이다. 신화와 전설이라는 콘텐츠의 이러한 소설적 변용을 통해, 이 작품은 현실의 경험세계에서 권력을 추구하는 집단과 그 집단에 희생된 민중들의 아픈 삶을 문제 삼으면서, 그러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 하나의 방법론으로 제주 섬사람들의 집단무의식에 내재한 한민족의 ‘넋’을 제주 신화와 전설을 통해 형상화하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

This article contains analysis of transformation and signification on the contents of myth and legend in novel The Island Swallowing a Myth . This novel was composed with combinations of narrative story that involves the myths of shamanism and legend. This novel composed with prolog, narrative 1~18, epilogue. The prolog and epilogue informed of the legend of ‘Agijangsu’ an oral tradition narrative story that meaning of baby general known only in Jeju Island. The narrative 1~18 informed of the myths in Jeju Island. The myths have showed shamanistic-songs three times shaman’s rites ‘Gut’ that is ‘Bamdangshin Bonpoori’, ‘Chogam-je Bonpoori’, ‘Baridegi’. The character types generally known of the folktale of ‘Agijangsu’ replaced with characters of the main narrative by similarity. As a result, the types of characters are opposed to those of rulers and subjects, perpetrators and victims, and ethical terms of good and evil. But this aspect is overturned by the story of Jeju s ‘Agijangsu’ that composed with ‘savior’, ‘bogus savior’, the third people who believed in the common destiny of the survival unit. In This novel, the Jeju Myth is presented as an alternative to preventing innocent sacrifices caused by power groups conflicts. It is the world of Jeju mythology where God, man, nature, earth, world and earth are united and live together. Through this fictional transformation of the contents of mythology and legend, this novel would solve the problems of the Jeju islanders, taking issue with the painful lives of those who are sacrificed for the group of seeking power in the real world. One way to solve such problems is to shape the soul of the Korean people inherent in that Jeju Island s collective unconscious through Jeju myths and legends.
