유길준의 「노동야학독본」과 「노동야학」 비교 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문에서는 유길준이 발간했던「노동야학독본」(1908)과 「노동야학」(1909)을 비교 고찰한다. 최근에 발굴된「노동야학」은 유길준이 같은 해에 두 가지 판본의「노동야학」관련 서적을 발간했음을 보여준다. 두 책은 한말 통감부의 검열, 노동야학회를 비롯한 유길준의 실업 활동과 연계하여 살필 수 있다.「노동야학독본」이 통감부 관할의 경성일보사에서 인쇄되었던 것과 달리, 「노동야학」은 유길준이 흥사단원의 저술을 발간하기 위해 설립한 동문관에서 인쇄되었다. 또한, 이번에 발굴된「노동야학」에는 노동야학회 고문 유길준의 위상과 계몽의식을 부각했던 삽화가 빠져 있다. 이점은 1908년 9월 학부의 칙령에 따라 노동야학회가 노동회로 명칭을 변경하고 노동야학교와 분리된 것과 관련된다. 노동 개념을 설명하고 근대 사회에서 노동자의 의미, 직업 윤리관 등을 제시한 교재라는 점에서「노동야학」은 노동야학독본의 연장선에 놓여 있다.「노동야학」은 구성, 내용, 문체상의 변화를 통해 노동자를 포함한 일반 독자가 쉽게 노동의 개념과 가치를 이해하고 노동자의 권리와 의무를 깨달을 수 있는 방향으로 나아갔다. 「노동야학」에 새롭게 추가된 내용은 노동의 도덕적, 경제적, 사회적 가치를 환기하는 동시에 근대 사회에서 노동자가 의식해야 할 요건들을 알려주어, 자본과의 관계에서 노동을 사유할 수 있게 했다. 또한, 유길준은 한자의 훈독과 부속국문체를 국문체로 전환하여 가독성을 높였다. 이점에서 「노동야학」은 노동야학독본을 극복한 개정본으로서 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 한말의 정치적 위기상황을 환기하고 국민의 국권회복 노력을 촉구하는 단원들의 삭제는, 유길준이 정치적 제약 속에서 「노동야학」을 편집하고 발간했음을 시사한다. 그런 맥락에서「노동야학」은 저자-독자라는 단순한 관계를 넘어 저자-검열자-(편집자로서의) 저자-독자라는 새로운 틀 속에서 읽어야 할 텍스트이다.

영문 초록

This paper compare and consider two books which are written by Yugiljun. These books are titled as ‘ Nodongyahakdokbon (勞動夜學讀本)’ and ‘ Nodongyahak (勞動夜學)’ respectively. From the Nodongyahak which is recently found, we can see that Yugiljun had published in the same year two different books under the same thema of night school for laborer. These two books can be looked into relating to the censorship of Japanese Resident-General of Korea at the end of Joseon dynasty and Yugiljun‘s activities of Nodongyahakhoe. Nodongyahakdokbon was published by the GyeongseongIlbo which was controlled by Japanese Resident-General of Korea but Nodongyahak was published by Dongmungwan which was established by Yugiljun to press the writings of Heungsadan. And in Nodongyahak , the illustrations are not included, which clearly show the position and enlightenment consciousness of Yugiljun who was advisor of night school gathering for laborer. This is related with the fact that night school for laborer was separated from Nodongyahakhoe which was renamed as Nodonghoe according to the imperial order in september 1908. Nodongyahak is aligned with Nodongyahakdokbo n in the aspect of that this book explains the concept of labor and presents in the modern society the meaning of laborer, ethical beliefs on job, etc. With the changes of structure, contents and style, this book proceeded to the direction in which general readers including laborer could easily understand the concept and value of labor and realize the rights and duties of laborer. The added contents in Nodongyahak made people to think about labor under the relation with capital by reminding ethical, economical and social values of labor and informing what laborer have to be conscious of in modern society. In addition, Yugiljun had increased readability in this book by applying the Korean style. In this aspect, Nodongyahak can be considered as a revision of Nodongyahakdokbon . And we can see that Yugiljun had edited and published Nodongyahak under the political pressure from the fact that some chapters in which politically critical situations were dealt and efforts for recovering national sovereignty were urged, had been deleted. Therefore this book has to be read not in the frame of author and reader but in the frame of author, censor, author as an editor and reader.
