국문 초록

본 연구는 1970년대 남한 번역시스템의 특수성을 드러내는 다양한 자료들을 분석함으로써, 남한문학장 내·외부에서 전개된 한국문학의 영어번역 실천의 사회문화적 의미를 파악코자 한다. 국내에서 전개된 한국문학의 영어번역은 1970년대에 이르러 다양한 민간번역 주체들의 자발적 참여에 의해서 비약적으로 증가한다. 하지만 번역출판물의 해외유통과 홍보, 판매와 같은 현실적 기반이 갖추어지지 않는 상황 속에서 이러한 번역실천들은 결국 내수용의 미완의 문화상품을 생산해 내는 것이었다. 식민지 시기 이래로 추상적인 차원에서 전개되었던 한국문학의 세계화 전략은 1968년 가와바타 야스나리의 노벨문학상 수상을 계기로 본격화되었다. 특히 1970년대 남한사회에서 한국문학의 영어번역 가능성과 한계에 대한 현실적 논의들은 국제 펜·클럽 한국위원회의 노벨문학상 후보 추천과 제 37차 세계작가대회 개최 및 아시아문학번역국 설치 문제를 통해 구체화되었다. 그러나 세계문학시 장의 이면에 작동하고 있는 냉전체제하의 거대한 정치역학의 흐름을 읽어낼 수 없었던 까닭에, 남한문단의 ‘외부’를 상상하며 끊임없이 세계문학의 중심을 향해 나아가고자 기획했던 주변부 지식인들의 역번역 실천들은 결국 ‘한국적인 것’과 ‘세계문학의 보편’ 사이에서 끊임없이 방황하며 한국문학의 ‘고립된 다시쓰기’로 회귀할 수밖에 없었다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the sociocultural meaning of English translation practice of Korean Literature within and outside the South Korean literary field, by analyzing various documents which could show the peculiarity of translation system in the 1970s. The 1970s saw the rapid increase of Korean Literature’s english translation by the voluntary participation of various private translators. Their translations, however, were closely akin to unfinished cultural products for domestic use, without realistic foundation such as overseas distribution, promotion and sales of translated publications. The Globalization Strategy of Korean literature, which had been developed in an abstract dimension since the colonial period, was launched in 1968 when Yasunari Kawabata(川端 康成) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The realistic discussions on the possibilities and limitations of English translation of Korean Literature in particular could take concrete shape through the recommendation of the Korean PEN s nomination for the Nobel Prize for Literature, the holding of the 37th PEN international Congress in Seoul, and the establishment of the Asian Writers Translation Bureau in the 1970s. Conflicting between “Korean things” and “the Universal of World literature,” private translators in South Korea had no choice but to return to their “Fixed Rewriting” of Korea Literature, because they could not understand the dynamics of international politics under the cold war system behind the global literary market.
