『문화/과학』과 1990년대 한국의 문화론

국문 초록

본고는 1992년 여름에 창간된 이후 2018년 여름까지 94호를 발간한 문화이론 계간지 『문화/과학』의 1990년대 초기 발행호들을 중심으로 잡지가 생산해온 한국형 문화 담론과 한국 문화연구의 현실을 진단해 보고자 한다. 소위 ‘잡지의 시대’ 나 ‘문화의 시대’라 불리던 1990년대에 창간된 『문화/과학』은 문화 담론이 폭발적으로 증가하던 당대의 문화 현상을 이론적으로 해석하고 문화 정세에 실천적으로 개입할 것을 목적으로 한국 문화연구의 지평을 넓히기 노력해 왔다. 본고는 잡지의 1992년 여름호인 창간호부터 1999년 겨울호인 20호까지를 분석 대상으로 삼아 1990년대 『문화/과학』의 점진적 변화와 한국의 문화연구에서의 위상과 기여도 등을 살펴볼 것이다. 또한, 그간에 잡지에서 다소 간과되거나 도외시되었던 한계점 등도 짚어볼 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on analyzing the early issues of Culture/Science , a South Korean quarterly journal of cultural theories, which has just released its 94th volume in the summer of 2018 since its first publication in the summer of 1992. By doing so, the paper tries to diagnose South Korean discourses on culture and cultural studies that the journal has produced. First published in the 1990s, in so-called the era of magazine or the era of culture with the exponential growth of cultural discourses in the nation, Culture/Science has taken the lead in South Korean cultural studies not only by expanding the horizon of the studies with the journal s theoretical interpretation of the cultural phenomena back then but also by practically intervening into the political and geopolitical situations. Closely reading the journal from its first issue published in the summer of 1992 to its twentieth volume in the winter of 1999, this paper explores the gradual changes in the tones and voices as well as its contribution to South Korean society made in Culture/Science during the 1990s. In addition, it points out the journal s more or less weak spots and downsides in its knowledge productions of South Korean cultural studies.
