‘광주 정신’의 시적 연대와 계승에 관한 연구

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 미국에서 발간된 사화집 『빛의 바다 1』과 『빛의 바다 2』를 통해 1980년대 초 미주시의 특징을 살펴보려는 것이다. 두 사화집은 미국에서 활동하는 대표적인 한인 시인들이 5.18광주라는 역사적 사건을 소재로 취택하여 형상화했다. 이 시기에 미주 시인들이 5.18이라는 당대 최대의 이슈를 소재로 사화집을 두 권이나 발간했다는 사실은 문학사적으로 매우 중요하다. 두 사화집은 고국에서 벌어지는 5.18의 비극과 민주화 운동에 대해 국내의 시인들보다 더 적극적인 고발과 비판을 했다. 이런 일이 가능했던 것은 일차적으로 국내의 탄압과 검열이 미치지 못하는 미국이라는 공간에서 이루어졌기 때문이다. 그러나 그보다 더 중요한 것은 미국에 살면서도 조국의 현실에 대해 가졌던 관심과 사랑이 크기 때문이었다. 두 사화집의 시편들이 보여주는 표현상의 특성은 우선 비교적 길이가 긴 시가 많다는 점이다. 이는 시의 리얼리티를 확보하기 위해 도입한 진술 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 5.18과 관련된 사건이나 일화 등을 시에 수용하는 과정에서 시가 길어질 수밖에 없었던 것으로 보인다. 다시 말해 시적 응축미를 포기하는 대신 리얼리티를 확보하고자 하는 의지가 반영된 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 두 사화집의 시편들은 파토스와 에토스를 강하게 드러내는 특성을 보여준다. 에토스는 폭력과 독재 시대에 대한 응전으로서의 윤리적 결단의 차원에서, 파토스는 민주주의와 정의를 향한 뜨거운 열정의 차원에서 강화되었다. 이러한 특성으로 인해 두 사화집의 시편들은 사실 시적 세련미나 미학적 완성도의 측면에서는 다소 부족한 모습을 보여준다. 요컨대 시의 중요한 기능 가운데 하나가 부정한 현실에 대한 고발이나 비판인데, 당시 미주의 한인 시인들은 시의 그러한 역할을 충실히 수행했다. 그 대표적인 시인은 고원, 이창윤, 이세방, 최연홍, 황갑주 등이다. 이들의 시는 비록 표현상의 세련미는 다소 부족했을지라도 시가 견지해야 할 시대적, 역사적 역할에 충실했다고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine characteristics of Korean American poems in the early 1980s through two anthology books, The Sea of Lights Vol. I and II. The two books deal with the tragic historical events that happened in Gwangju on May 18, 1980. The fact that Korean American poets tackled the biggest political issue in South Korea at that time and published the poetry books on them has an important meaning in the aspect of the history of Korean literature. The Sea of Lights Vol. I and II gave more acute criticism on the tragedy of Gwangju massacre and severe crackdown on Koreans’ demand for democracy by the Korean dictatorial regime than their Korean native counterparts. The primal reason that Korean American poets could be more active on criticising the dictatorship of South Korean government and raising their voice strongly against it is that they did not have to worry about the government oppression and censorship due to the geological benefit. However, the more important thing that the author want to point out is that they did that out of deep care for and interest in their own native country. The first poetic characteristic of The Sea of Lights Vol. I and II is that most are rather long poems because the poets wanted to describe the tragic events more realistically. It seems that it is inevitable to choose detail explanations in order to describe the Gwangju massacre realistically. In other words, Korean American poets in the early 1980s had an intention to show what happened in Gwangju through detail explanations instead of poetic condensation. Another characteristic is that The Sea of Lights Vol. I and II show strong pathos and ethos. Ethos in those books is intensified as ethical resolution in order to show resistance against violence and dictatorship. Pathos is solidified by showing passionate desire for democracy and justice. Ironically, those characteristics reduce poetical refinement and aesthetical completion of The Sea of Lights Vol. I and II. In conclusion, regarding that one of the significant roles of poetry is that it criticizes social injustice and wrongfulness or informs the public of them, the early 1980s’ Korean American poets played their role justifiably. The poets actively involved in this role are Won Go, Changyun Lee, Sebang Lee, Yeonhong Choi, and Gapju Hwang. Although their poems lack refinement in terms of poetic expressions, they should be praised because they play a meaningful role as historical beacon that poetry should be.
