인성교육의 윤리학적 기초로서의 덕윤리

국문 초록

본 논문은 최근 대두되고 있는 인성교육이 윤리학에서 덕윤리에 기반할 수 있음 을 보이려 하였다. 덕윤리는 의무론과 공리주의를 중심으로 구성된 기존의 규범 윤 리학에 제3의 대안으로 등장한 비교적 최근의 경향이다. 덕윤리 학자들은 그 둘을 의무 윤리라 부르며 자신과 구별한다. 의무 윤리가 옳은 행위가 무엇인지를 논구한 다면, 덕윤리는 덕있는 행위자는 어떤 사람인가를 논구한다. 옳은 행위는 덕있는 행 위자로부터 나온다고 생각하기 때문이다. 의무 윤리는 도덕 원칙을 이해함으로써, 도덕적 행위가 보장된다고 보는 반면, 덕윤리는 그것을 부인한다. 덕윤리학자들은 도덕적 이해는 물론 도덕적 정서와 습관화까지 포함한 덕을 행위자가 갖추어야만 도 덕적 행위가 보장된다고 본다. 그런데 도덕적 이해와 도덕적 행동 사이에는 의지라 든가 정서, 그리고 습관과 같은 지식 이외의 요소가 개입한다. 그것은 마치, 우리의 이성이 구현되려면 우리의 몸을 거쳐야 하는 것과 같다. 그러므로 도덕적 이해가 도 덕적 행위를 곧바로 보장해주지 않는다. 덕윤리는 도덕적 이해는 물론 정서와 습관 까지 함양하므로써 도덕적 이해와 도덕적 행위의 간극을 메워야 한다고 주장하는 것 이다. 덕은 좋은 행위를 하려는 성향으로서 도덕적 이해는 물론 정서와 습관까지를 포함하는 것이다. 그러므로 덕은 좋은 인성이고, 그것이 바로 인성교육의 목표이다. 그러므로 인성교육이 학생들의 행위보다는 품성을 기르는데 초점을 두는 것과 일맥 상통한다. 인성교육은 주지교육의 문제점에 대한 반성으로부터 비롯된 것이기도 하고, 도덕 판단력 교육의 한계에 대한 반성으로부터 비롯된 것이기도 하다. 덕윤리는 정의, 용 기, 절제, 인내와 같은 핵심적 덕목은 물론 관대함, 관용, 창의성, 심미성, 자부심 등 과 같은 다양한 덕목의 의미를 규정하고, 그것이 인생에서 왜 가치있는 것인가를 논 구한다. 그리고 이와 같은 덕윤리의 덕목들은 그대로 인성교육의 좋은 인성 목록과 그대로 겹쳐진다. 덕윤리의 논의에 기대어 좋은 인성 목록을 보다 더 확충할 수도 있 으며, 좋은 인성 목록들 간에 위계를 세울 수도 있다. 또한 인성교육의 내용을 덕윤 리가 제공할 수도 있다. 그런 점에서 덕윤리는 인성교육의 훌륭한 윤리학적 기반이다.

영문 초록

What I ve got to suggest in this paper is that character education could be and should be founded upon virtue ethics. Virtue ethics is a recent stream to be risen as the third camp in the world of normative ethics to be consisted of just two theoretical camps, deontology and utilitarianism. Virtue ethicists call the two camps duty ethics to tell themselves from the two. Duty ethics look into what right action is, but virtue ethics who virtuous agent is. For virtue ethicists think that right action come from virtuous agent. Duty ethicists believe that moral action come from understanding moral principles, while virtue ethicists don t approve it. Virtue ethicists take the position that moral actions are taken place just when agents have moral emotions and habits as well as moral understanding. However, in the middle between our moral understanding and moral actions always intervene our will, emotions, or habits. It s as like that our reason have to go through our bddy before it materialize itself. Therefore moral understanding don t always make sure to do good actions. It t the point of virtue ethics that only when agents build up moral emotions and habits as well as moral unterstanding, they could fill up the gap between moral understanding and actions. For virtue is a disposition to be willing to do some good actions, and the disposition is consist of moral understanding, emotions, and good habits. Therefore virtue is a good character which character education aims at. It s why character education is in line with virtue ethics in their focusing on character traits not actions. Character education movement began from the reflection about the problems of knowledge-centered education, and the limits of the understanding-centered moral education. Virtue ethics make clear the meanings of cardianal virtues as like justice, courage, temperance, patience as well as other virtues as like tolerance, creativity, esthetic, pride etc. and discuss why they have values in our life. The list of virtues in virtue ethics are same as the list of good characters in character education. We are able to add up some items of good character and array up a ranking of the items by referring to virute ethics. Virtue ethics may also be a contents of character education. Therefore, virtue ethics can be a good foundation of character education under an increasing interest.
