청소년이 개념화하고 있는 ‘국민’의 의미

국문 초록

본 연구는 청소년이 ‘국민’에 대해서 어떻게 느끼고, 무엇을 생각하며 개념화하고 있는지를 질적으로 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2016년 9월에 송파구에 위치한 공립 고등학교 1학년 398명에게 국민과 시민에 대한 자유로운 글쓰기를 실행하고, 398 건의 텍스트를 2차례에 걸쳐 분석하였으며, 그 중 여학생 6명과 남학생 10명에 대한 초점집단 인터뷰를 통해 질적 사례 연구를 진행하였다. 이러한 텍스트 분석과 인터 뷰를 통해서 청소년은 국민을 국가의 보호를 받으며, 국가에 복종해야 하는 소극적 의미와 상하 개념이 포함된 ‘수직적’ 의미로 개념화하고 있으며, 상대적으로 시민은 시민의식과 실천을 통해 스스로를 지키는 상하 개념이 없는 ‘수평적’ 의미와 적극적인 의미로 개념화하고 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 청소년에게 내재된 이러한 억압적인 국민의 의미를 인식하고, 보다 발전적이고 진취적인 ‘시민적 국민’에 대한 재개념화가 필요함을 제언하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study is to explore the meaning of nation that Korean adolescents conceptualized. For this, a qualitative case study was used as a research methodology. The study analyzed 398 texts about the nation and citizen of first - year high school students. and 6 times of FGI(Focus Group interviews) as data. The results are as follows. Young people were accepting the nation as a vertical concept that people should follow the law passively pass under the control of national law. Therefore, adolescents thought that other groups could fulfill their duties in order to become a korean nation under the rule of law only when they had patriotism. However, Due to the influence of the civil revolution in history, young people were accepting the concept of citizens as a very active horizontal concept. Accordingly, they perceived that citizens could protect themselves through civic consciousness and self – actualization. In the end, the youth recognized the people as a very oppressive concept by their historical background and their own lives. Such oppressive people are not positive in multicultural society. Therefore, this study suggests that there should be the need for a re-conceptualization of civic nation as nationhood which can overlap and include the meaning of citizen.
