Parafiction and Contemporary Artists’ Intervention in the Writing of Histories

국문 초록

본고는 “파라픽션 (parafiction)”과 “직감적으로 믿는 진실 (truthiness)”이라는 두 가지 개념으로 논의를 시작한다. 두 개념 모두 진실 (truth)과 대비되는 “그럴 듯 해 보이는 허위”라는 의미를 내포하며, SNS, 페이크 뉴스 (Fake News) 등 각종 미디어를 통해 유포되는 허위사실들이 현대 사회에 미치는 영향을 대변한다. 일례로, 2003년 7월 타임지는 부시 행정부의 이라크 공격에 대한 발표문의 허위성을 문제 삼아 “허위와 그에 따른 결과 (Untruth and Consequences)”를 표지 타이틀로 내걸었고, 이후 2005년 “직감적으로 믿는 진실 (truthiness),” 즉 실제의 진실보다는 본인이 믿고 싶은 바를 진실이라고 믿는 경향을 일컫는 이 단어는, 미국 방언 학회, 미리엄-웹스터 등 각종 사전에서 올해의 단어로 선정된 바 있다. 이에 필자는, 이러한 사회현상에 대응하는 현대 작가들의 반응에 주목하고, 그들이 허구 (fiction)를 통해 로컬의 역사적 이슈를 국제적으로 정치화하는 전략을 분석한다. 마이클 블럼 (1966년생, 이스라엘)은 2005년 이스탄불 비엔날레에서, 가상 인물인 사피에 비하 (Safiye Behar)를 기리는 모조 박물관을 창작한다. 또한 왈리드 라드 (1967년생, 레바논)가 창설한 아틀라스 그룹 (The Atlas Group)은 레바논 내전당시 큰 이슈가 되었던 인질상황을 촬영한 듯한 비디오를 제작한다. 이 두 작품에서 보이는 허구화의 정도는 다르지만, 두 작품 모두 각 작가가 주목하는 로컬의 역사적 이슈를 전략적으로 정치화한다. 두 작품에서 재현되는 허구적 내러티브에 대한 수용은, 지역사회 관람자인지, 혹은 국제 관람자인지에 따라 다르게 작동한다. 어떤 면에서 본고에서 다루는 두 작가는, 그들의 작품을 비엔날레 등 국제무대에 선보임에 있어, 로컬-글로벌이라는 이분법적 구도에 따른 지역적 특수성과 세계적 보편성이 동시에 획득될 수 있는가에 의문을 제기한다. 이에 필자는, 두 작가가 “국제주의”에 비판적 입장을 담지하고 있음과 동시에, 로컬에 대한 우리의 이해가 얼마나 정확할 수 있는가에 대해 질문을 제기하고 있음을 주장한다.

영문 초록

In this research, I begin with the discussion of two concepts, parafiction and truthiness, all of which involve the meaning of “the plausible yet untrue” illuminating how untruths have had catastrophic effects on our society and politics recently. For instance, the cover headline of the July 21, 2003 issue of Time, “Untruth and Consequences” featured the Bush administration’s statements, which justified the United States’ 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq. Many American and international audiences had doubts about the statements at that time, and later the statements have been proven false. Also the term truthiness, which came from Stephen Colbert’s satirical news program, The Colbert Report (2005-2015), was selected as the word of the year by the American Dialectic Society in 2005, and then by Merriam-Webster in 2006. The two concepts demonstrate the pervaded unreliability in our socio-political situation, and contemporary artists, in a sense, have responded to such a situation by playing with a range of spectrum of truth, from truer to the less true or untrue. Here, I examine the ways in which contemporary artists utilize fiction in order to reconstruct their contested, local histories in a global context. Michael Blum (b. 1966, Israel) created a site-specific, faux-museum, Tribute to Safiye Behar (2005) to commemorate a faux-legendary figure, Safiye Behar. Also The Atlas Group (created by Walid Raad, b. 1967, Lebanon) produced a simulated version of the Lebanese hostage-taking crisis via Hostage: The Bachar Tapes (#17 and #31)_English Version (2000). Although the degree of fictionalization is differed in their projects, I analyze their artistic strategies by focusing on the concepts of parafiction and truthiness and examine the ways in which the two artists mobilize their local histories for local as well as international viewers. The reception of the fictional narratives presented in the two artists’ projects function differently according viewers. And in a sense, the two artists experiment to what degree, their projects are perceived and understood locally specific yet globally legible in an international art system. Ultimately, I argue that the two artists’ project problematize the very idea of internationalism while asking how we will gauge the border of truth and fiction in our understanding about a far-reaching locale.
