국문 초록

카펫은 원시 시대로부터 오랜 세월동안 인류의 주거생활에서 실용적, 장식적 용도로 사용되어 왔으며 인간의 삶을 풍요롭게 해 주는 필수품 가운데 하나이다. 카펫은 각 나라와 지방, 마을과 가족단위로 다양한 제조 기술과 디자인의 특성을 지니고 있는바 그 다양성은 오랜 세월을 거치며 전승되었다. 현대에 이르러서는 산업화를 통해 그러한 다양한 전통들이 계승되고 있을 뿐만 아니라 수요와 공급에 있어서 경쟁력 있는 섬유 문화산업의 한 축으로 굳건히 그 위치를 차지하고 있다. 카펫은 주로 중앙아시아, 스칸디나비아 반도 및 근동지방에서 사회, 경제, 문화, 역사, 종교, 예술 등의 제반 분야에서 그 가치와 다양한 상징적 의미를 지니는 역사적 문화유산의 산물로서 인간의 삶과 밀접한 관계를 가지며 발전해 왔다. 기계에 의한 대량 생산 방식이 지배적인 오늘날에도 숙련된 장인의 정성과 솜씨가 깃든 카펫은 여전히 카펫 문화권에서는 최고의 가치를 지닌 수공예품(手工藝品) 중 하나이며, 중앙아시아 제국은 물론 구미에 이르기까지 현대 주거 문화에 있어 주요한 인테리어 제품으로 자리 잡고 있다. 오늘날 수직(手織) 카펫은 각국에서 전통과 문화의 맥을 계승하려는 노력과 함께 홈 인테리어의 관심과 수요의 급증으로 다시금 부흥의 기회를 맞이하고 있음을 국제적인 카펫 전시회나 박람회(ex. DOMO Tex, Heim Tex 등)를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 16세기 이전의 사료가 많이 남아 있지 않아 다양한 연구와 조사가 필요한 것으로 추정되는 카펫의 기원, 그리고 발전과정에 관한 사료가 풍성한 시점인 16세기 이집트, 터키, 페르시아 삼국의 화려하고 융성했던 카펫에 초점을 맞추어 역사적인 맥락을 고려하여 그 특성을 비교ㆍ분석하였다. 아울러 카펫에 내재된 상징과 의미, 디자인적 특징과 역사적 고찰을 통해 서유럽으로의 전파 및 발전과정이 현대 카펫 산업에 끼친 영향을 살펴보고 이를 통해 국내외적으로 관련분야의 섬유 산업에 관한 비전과 전망을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Since the primitive times, carpets have been used for decorative and practical purposes in residential areas for a long time, enriching human life. Carpets have a variety of manufacturing techniques and design characteristics by country, region, or village and family. Carpet production skills have been handed down through several generations. These days, through the industrialization, it has been rapidly developed and settled in the textile and cultural industry. In Central Asia, Scandinavia or the Near East, carpets have been developed with a close relationship with human life as a historical product with various symbolic meanings in the fields of society, economy, culture, history, religion and art of each age. Even today, although the mass production by the machines is prevalent, carpets with skilled craftsmanship and technology are still considered to be one of the most valuable handicrafts, which are one of the indispensable factors of modern human life. In particular, with the current efforts to succeed tradition and culture, and with the increased interest and demand of home interiors, handcrafted carpets are seeking for the next Renaissance through a variety of international carpet fairs (ex. DOMO Tex, Heim Tex). In this study, we aimed to explore the origins and development process of carpets in many different aspects, where various researches and investigations are considered to be necessary because of the insufficient information and records. In addition, this study focused on the carpets of Egypt, Turkey, and Persia in the 16th century, which boasted a splendid and brilliant culture, and examined their influence on the design, color, and pattern of the modern carpets. Based on this study, we hope to present the clues for developing various textile materials and for the future textile industry.
