포스트모더니즘적 관점에서 본 민화와 우키요에의 비교연구

국문 초록

모든 예술과 사조들은 과거로부터 반발하거나 계승하고 또한 차용하면서 발전되어 나아간다. 포스트모더니즘 또한 모더니즘의 연속인 동시에 부정으로 리얼리즘의 객관적 재현미학에 반대하는 것이다. 민화나 우키요에나 사실적인 부분을 회화로 담아내고는 있지만 구도나 크기에서는 리얼리즘 회화와는 다른 방식을 취하고 있다. 이는 논리적 사회문화에서 감각적 사회문화로의 변화를 반영하여 담아내고 있다. 포스트모더니즘이 자본주의 소비문화와 대중예술에 기반을 두고 있는 점에서 대중적 회화인 민화와 우키요에와 같은 맥락으로 볼 수 있으며, 그 특성들도 포스트모더니즘적 관점에서 유사한 미학적 개념을 지니고 있음을 알 수 있다. 민화는 우리민족의 독창적 예술성을 가장 잘 나타내고 있으며, 민화 그림속의 무늬들은 각각의 의미와 상징을 지니고 있어 옛 사람들의 생활과 생각들을 알 수 있다. 또한, 민화는 인간내면의 무의식 세계를 표현한다는 점에서도 매우 조형적인 특징을 지니고 있다. 우키요에는 정토성불(淨土成佛)하는 불교적 사상에서 출발하여 현세를 잘 살아보자는 향락주의적 인생관을 보여주려 했던것에 기인해서 지극히 일상적인 화풍으로 사람들의 생활상을 감각적으로 풀어낸다. 기존의 틀과 관습을 타파하고자 하는 시대의 흐름에 따라 장식적인 요소가 강한 화려한 색채와 기존의 방식과 다른 구도, 대담함 등의 혁신적인 요소가 유럽인들에게 매력적으로 다가갔을 것으로 여겨진다. 함축적이면서도 동양적인 정서를 반영한 표현으로 독특한 아름다움을 지닌 민화와 우키요에에는 대중성, 상징성, 다양성, 장식성, 일상성 등의 특징들을 볼 수 있다. 민화와 우키요에의 평범하면서도 감각적인 화풍은 이제까지 답습되어온 관념화된 전통적 동양화풍의 틀에서 벗어나 신선한 사고의 전환을 가져다주게 된 화풍이다. 이 두 소재를 포스트모더니즘의 여러 요소 중에 대중성과 조형성을 중심으로 비교연구 함으로써 우리 민화의 가치를 재발견하고, 이를 통해 세계화의 무한한 가능성을 인식하여야 한다.

영문 초록

All arts and trends develop while resisting against the past, and inheriting or borrowing from it. Postmodernism also is a continuation of modernism while opposing against objective representation esthetics of realism. Although folk painting and Ukiyo-e represent realistic parts in the form of painting, they take different methods from realism painting in composition or size. This reflects a shift from logical social culture to sensible social culture. Postmodernism can be seen in the same context as popular painting such as folk art and Ukiyo-e in the sense that it is based on consumption culture of capitalism and popular art. Characteristics of folk painting and Ukiyo-e have a similar esthetic concept from the perspective of postmodernism. Folk painting represents the unique artistry of Korean people more than anything else, and each pattern in folk painting has its own meaning and symbol that enable us to have a glimpse of life and thought of our ancestors. Also, folk paining has a good deal of plastic characteristics in the sense that it represents the unconscious inner world of human beings as well. Ukiyo-e, which began from a Buddhist thought of attaining Buddhahood in Pure Land that gave rise to a hedonistic outlook on life, describes everyday life of people sensibly in an extremely matter-of-fact fashion. Such innovative elements as brilliant and fanciful colors, composition that is different from existing styles, and boldness which reflect the current trend to get out of existing conventions and frames must have appeared attractive to Europeans. In folk painting and Ukiyoe containing a unique beauty which reflects connotative and Oriental sentiment, one can see characteristics of popular appeal, symbolism, diversity, fanciness, and everyday life. Plain and sensitive fashion that characterizes folk painting and Ukiyo-e is a style of painting that enables us to get out of a conceptual tradition in Oriental painting for a refreshing shift in our thinking. Accordingly, an attempt was made in this thesis to rediscover the value of Korea’s folk painting by conducting a comparative study of these two subjects in the context of postmodernism and to recognize the unlimited potential of folk painting for globalization through it.
