국문 초록

현대 유리공예 분야에서는 유리를 예술적 표현 수단으로 활용하여 예술적 가치를 부각시키는 경향이 두드러지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 유리실을 드로잉 도구로 활용하는 연구자의 작품을 역사적 맥락을 통해 분석하고, 유리 제작기법이 어떻게 시간의 흐름에 따라 발전되고 활용되었는지 탐구하였다. 이를 통해 현대 유리공예에서 나타난 재료 활용의 새로운 시도와, 고대의 제작기술을 바탕으로 단순히 기술의 재현을 넘어 개인의 창의성이 강조되는 양상을 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 연구자의 작품에서 유리 스트링거(Glass Stringer, 이하 스트링거 혹은 유리실)를 드로잉 도구로 사용한 것에 주목하여 유리공예의 역사에서 선(線)이 활용된 사례를 분석하고, 현대에 와서 어떻게 변화하거나 발전되었는지 살펴보았다. 세부적으로는 고대 이집트의 코어성형 기법과 이탈리아(무라노)의 케인 및 무리니 기법에서 사용된 유리실의 활용을 살펴보고, 이후 현대 유리공예 작가들 중 유리를 사용하여 선적인 표현을 하거나 유리 스트링거를 물리적 드로잉 도구로 활용한 사례들을 통해 동시대 유리공예에서 실험적으로 확장되는 선의 활용을 탐구하였다. 이를 바탕으로 현대 유리공예에서 재료를 창작자의 주관적 표현 수단으로 활용하는 다양한 가능성을 제시하고, 역사적 고찰과 작품 제작 연구를 통해 유리공예 분야에서 선적인 표현에 대한 새로운 이해를 도출하고자 하였다. 유리 스트링거를 그리기 도구로 활용함으로써 유리공예의 영역이 드로잉 영역과 융합될 수 있는 가능성을 확인하며, 유리공예 분야에서 전통적으로 장식적 요소로 간주되어온 선을 활용한 기법에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하고 동시대 창작자들에게 재료의 활용과 표현의 확장에 영감이 될 수 있길 기대해본다.

영문 초록

There has been a continuous trend to emphasize the artistic value of glass and utilize it as a means of artistic expression in contemporary glass art. This study examines the historical background of glass art and its development in the modern era, focusing on the works of the researcher who uses glass thread as a drawing tool. This study investigates how glass production techniques have evolved and been utilized over time. Furthermore, in modern era, these production techniques actively serve as artistic tools, crucial in expressing individual creativity and thoughts. This study explicitly highlights the use of glass stringers(or glass threads) as a drawing tool in the works of the researcher, aiming to analyze cases where lines have been utilized in the historical context of glass art. After examining cases where colored glass threads have been utilized in ancient and contemporary times, the study analyzes the influence of using glass thread in the historical context of ancient glass, focusing on specific techniques such as core forming in ancient Egypt and cane and murrine techniques in Italy (Murano). Subsequently, the study explores the experimental expression of line usage in contemporary glass art by analyzing artworks of glass artists utilizing glass for linear expressions or employing glass threads or stringers as physical drawing tools. The analysis includes a detailed examination of the work of the researcher who utilized stringers as a drawing tool, drawing insights from historical reviews and artistic production research. Through this historical exploration and artwork analysis, the study derives a new understanding of line expression in glass art, presenting intriguing discussions on the potential for material utilization and expression expansion. This research contributes a fresh perspective to techniques traditionally considered decorative in glass art, anticipating new possibilities for material use and artistic expression.
