론 네이글의 소형 도자 조형 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 동시대 도예가 론 네이글(Ron Nagle, 1939-)의 도자와 합성수지를 접목한 작품세계를 탐구하고 유형별로 작품을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 네이글은 문화적으로 다양한 요인들에 영향을 받으며 작품세계를 확장해 나갔다. 본문에서는 1950년대 캘리포니아 점토 혁명과 피니쉬 페티쉬 영향, 소규모 조각에 대한 영감 준 여러 요인을 살펴보았다. 작품군을 컵과 소형 조각으로 나누고 소형 조각은 오브제와 디오라마로 분류하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 네이글의 초기 컵 작업은 도예의 관용적 표현과 물리적 특징을 이용한 시각적 유희를 제공하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 드로잉에 기반한 형태 탐구와 마감재로서의 합성수지의 사용은 감각적인 색채와 형태를 구사하고 시각적 유희를 제공하였다. 2010년대부터 현재에 이르는 작품들은 오브제에서 디오라마 형식으로 변화되어 공간감이 확장된 점을 알 수 있었다. 또한 점토의 즉각성(immediacy)을 강조하며 물성 표현을 탐구하고 합성수지를 채색재와 마감재에서 표현재로도 활용하며 새로운 조형언어에 도전하였다. 특별하게 고안된 전시 설치와 독특한 제목 짓기 공식은 감상자와의 상호작용을 도모하고 언어적 시각적 유희를 제공하였다. 네이글은 도자의 전형성을 고수하는 동시에 새로운 매체로의 전환을 시도하여 표현 영역을 끊임없이 확대하고 있다. 60년이 넘는 창작 활동 기간 동안 일관되게 소형 조각을 고수한 장인정신과 고도로 정교한 미감은 유일무이한 작품세계로 구현되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the work of contemporary artist Ron Nagle (1939-), who combines ceramics and resin, and to analyze his work by form. Nagle's work has been influenced by a variety of cultural factors. This study examine the California Clay Revolution of the 1950s, the influence of the finish fetish, and other factors that inspired her small-scale sculptures. The body of work is analyzed by dividing it into cups and small sculptures, and the small sculptures into objects and dioramas. The results show that Nagle's early cups offer a visual play with the idiomatic expression and physical properties of ceramics. The drawing-based exploration of form and the use of synthetic resin as a finishing material resulted in a sensual use of color and form and visual play. Works from the 2010s to the present show a shift from object to diorama form, expanding the sense of space and exploring the archetypal expression of ceramics with an emphasis on immediacy. Specially designed exhibition installations and unique title formulas encourage viewer interaction and provide verbal and visual humor. The use of synthetic resin as a coloring, finishing, and expressive material challenged a new sculptural language. While maintaining the archetypal qualities of ceramics, Nagle continues to expand his range of expression by turning to new media. Over 60 years of creative activity, the craftsmanship that consistently adheres to small-scale sculpture, the application of other materials, and the highly developed aesthetic have resulted in a unique body of work. This provides a clue to the direction of human-driven craft and art in the era of artificial intelligence.
