국문 초록

메리 켈리는 출산, 모성, 노동과 관련된 여성의 개인적인 경험들을 예술적 표현을 통해 탐구하는 작가이다. 본 연구의 목적은 1970년대부터 줄곧 여성해방운동에 참여한 켈리가 어떻게 성차에서 비롯된 불평등과 억압에 대항하여 예술작품을 통해 가부장적 사회 구조의 변화와 여성 인권 증진에 이바지했는지를 탐구하는 것이다. Ⅱ장에서 문헌 조사를 바탕으로 켈리의 예술 세계를 형성한 배경 및 페미니즘 미술과 여성 운동의 상호작용에 대한 이론을 고찰한다. Ⅲ장에서는 켈리가 1970년대 발표한 <야간 청소부들>, <산후 기록>, <사이>와 <사랑 노래들>을 주요 분석대상으로 삼아 여성 중심의 관점에서 소외된 여성들의 기록을 발굴한 투쟁의 증거로서의 의의를 분석 서술한다. 켈리의 작품은 규모가 거대한 자전적 설치미술과 혼합매체 형식으로 성, 정체성, 기억과 같이 여성 삶의 다층적 측면을 포착하여 문제를 제기함으로써 페미니즘의 주요 이슈에 대한 인식을 높이고 여성을 향한 편협한 사회의 시선을 교정한 매개로서의 가치가 있다. 가부장적 제도에 의해 형성된 여성의 이미지를 재현하는 대신 사회적 차별을 기록하고 이를 작품으로 표현하여 페미니즘 예술의 발전과 사회의식의 증진을 도모한 그의 작품은 페미니즘 예술의 중요성을 강조하고 여성의 목소리와 경험을 중시하면서 사회적 변화를 추동한다.

영문 초록

Mary Kelly is an artist who explores women's personal experiences of childbirth, motherhood, and work through artistic expression. The purpose of this study is to explore how Kelly, an active participant in the women's liberation movement since the 1970s, has contributed to the transformation of patriarchal social structures and the promotion of women's rights through her artwork by challenging inequality and oppression based on gender differences. Based on a literature review, Chapter II examines the background that shaped Kelly's artistic practice and theories about the interaction between feminist art and the women's movement. Chapter III analyzes Kelly's 1970s works Night Sweepers, Postpartum Records, Between, and Love Songs as evidence of the struggle to unearth the records of marginalized women from a woman-centered perspective. Kelly's works are large-scale autobiographical installations and mixed-media works that capture and problematize the multilayered aspects of women's lives, such as gender, identity, and memory, raising awareness of key issues in feminism and correcting society's narrow view of women. Instead of reproducing images of women shaped by the patriarchal system, his work documents and expresses social discrimination in order to promote the development of feminist art and social awareness, emphasizing the importance of feminist art and promoting social change by highlighting women's voices and experiences.
