공선옥 소설 속 ‘장소’의 의미

국문 초록

근대 이후 세계는 합리적 개인 주체를 중심으로 발전해왔다. 그 과정에서 ‘장소’는 근대 이성에 의해 조작․관리되는 부수적이고 수동적인 존재로 치부되었다. 그러나 실상 인간은 장소를 통해 정체성을 확립하고 안정감을 형성하여 그것을 바탕으로 비로소 외부로 나아갈 수 있는 존재이다. 따라서 장소와 인간은 긴밀한 상호 관계 속에서 서로가 서로를 규정하는 불가분의 관계에 있다. 이러한 맥락은 장소적 의미로 해석할 수 있는 신체에 관한 문제로도 확장할 수 있다. 현대 사회의 많은 폭력적 문제들은 합리적 개인 주체를 이와 같은 열린 구조를 통해 재규정함으로써 해결의 실마리를 찾을 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 공선옥의 최근작들『명랑한 밤길』, 『영란』, 『꽃같은 시절』에는 바로 이러한 문제의식이 구체화되고 있다. 공선옥은 작품 속 인물들을 통해, 신체로 장소를 살아가기에 자신의 주변과 끊임없이 영향관계를 주고받는 섬세한 존재로 인간을 이해한다. 이렇게 볼 때 인간은 근본적으로 취약한 존재로서 혼자 살아가는 것이 불가능하며 버틀러가 말하는 ‘근본적 사회성’을 품고 있다. 따라서 사람은 사람을 돌보고 책임지는 자세를 가지는 방식을 통해야만 인간을 받아들일 수 있고, 마찬가지로 인간으로 받아들여질 수 있는 것이다. 공선옥 소설은 이와 같은 인간 이해를 토대로 자신과 자기 주변을 둘러싼 존재들 간의 취약함을 직시하고, 그것에 공감하는 행위를 통해 장소를 나누는 인물들을 형상화해 보이고 있다. 가진 자들을 중심으로 움직인다고 해도 과언이 아닌 이 세상에서, 헐벗은 이가 내미는 요청에 대해 취약한 존재 그 자체로 응답하면서 만들어 내는 공동체가 공선옥이 형상화하고자 하는 바이다. 그리고 이 과정에서 이들이 만들어가는 자생적 미의식은 세상의 서열적 위계적 가치체계를 타파하고 새로운 공공성을 만들어간다. 이러한 공동체의 가능성은 가족주의를 넘어서고 지역이기주의와도 다른 관계 형성의 메커니즘이다. 그리고 이것이 매체의 발달과 신자유주의 논리에 의해 급속하게 변화하고 있는 오늘날 삶의 양식들 속에서 인간의 자유와 평등을 관철할 수 있는 가치의 근간을 이룰 것으로 보인다. 이러한 방식으로 응집된 공동체 속에서 우리는 새로운 연대와 아래로부터의 정치력을 확보할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the modern age the world has been developed by rational individuals based on the logic of cogito. In that process, ‘Place’ is regarded as incidental and passive one which is operated and managed by rational reason. But actually human beings establish their identity and form a sense of security through the place. Based on it they can go forward to the world. Therefore place and human are inseparable from each other in close mutual relationship. From this point of view human body can be understanded as place, too. By redetermination of rational individuals we can find the solution of violent problems in modern society. Novelist Gong Seon-ok’s works in recent - 『The Merry Night Road』,『Young-ran』, and『The Flowerlike Days』have been embodied this problem. Through the characters in her works Gong Seon-ok forms very delicate side of human being who is related with place and body. In this point human beings are fundamentally vulnerable existence who cannot live alone. This concept is connected to the ‘fundamental sociality’ of Judith Butler. So, by looking after and answering for people, human beings can hold humanity. Gong Sun-ok's novels are based on this concept. Humans in her works are to face up to the vulnerability of themselves, other people, and surroundings and through the empathy they create new relationship. In the world moved by persons with the social influence, as vulnerable ones, face on other weak presence is the core theme of Gong Sun-ok. And in this process people are going to make spontaneous aesthetic to break the sequence of hierarchical value system of the world ever going to create a new public service. The possibility of such a community passes over paternalism or regional self-centerness. And I think it would make the basis of the value that can be pierced man's freedom and equality in the form of life in today's with rapidly changing by the media and the development of neo-liberalism. In the community with this way we will be able to gain political power from below and a new community solidarity.
