박완서 노년소설에 나타나는 질병의 의미

국문 초록

본고는 박완서의 노년소설에 나타나는 질병 중 크게 암, 중풍, 치매를 중심으로 그 질병으로서의 의미와 주제론적 특징을 나누어 살펴보았다. 이러한 작업을 통해 암, 중풍, 치매와 같은 질병은 단순히 노년성 질병으로서의 소재적 의미에 그치는 것이 아니라 여러 가지 상징적 의미와 아이러닉한 속성을 가지고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 먼저 ‘암’은 일반적으로 은유화된 특징인 ‘빠른 전이 속도’와 ‘광포함’의 의미로 작용하는 것이 아니라 노년기라는 시간적 특성이 강하게 반영되어 ‘예정된 죽음’을 품위 있게 준비할 수 있는 장치로 작용한다. 이점은 노년기 ‘암’의 전이 속도가 빠르지 않다는 것, 그리고 죽음이 온전하게 예정되어 있는 질병이라는 특징에서 연유된다.‘중풍’에서 중요하게 다루어지는 것은 마음대로 움직일 수 없는 육체의 상황이다. 특히 ‘마음대로 움직일 수 없는 육체’와 ‘아직도 왕성한 성욕’을 대비하여 보여 줌으로써 중풍이 지닌 욕구의 아이러닉한 상황을 제시하고 있으며, 이는 육체와 욕구의 불협화음을 통한 생의 아이러닉함까지 보여 주는 것으로도 해석될 수 있다.‘치매’는 육체적인 손상보다는 자아의 훼손과 인격 파괴의 모습을 강하게 보여 준다. 치매는 질병 당사자의 감추어진 인격이 치매라는 상황을 통해 드러나듯, 치매 노인을 부양하는 가족의 감추어져 있던 위선과 허위의식이 드러나는 계기가 된다. 또 치매는 ‘어머니 역할’로만 어머니를 파악하던 자기 본위의 내면 심리에서 벗어나 인간으로서의 어머니를 파악하게 된다는 점에서 역시 인생의 아이러닉한 면을 드러내 주는 장치라고 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 박완서의 노년소설은 그 자체가 가지고 있는 질병의 독특한 병리적 상징으로 인해 노년기 삶의 여러 모습들을 보여 주며, 특히 인생의 아이러닉함을 강하게 부각시켜 준다. 또한 박완서 노년소설의 발표 연대에 따라 노년을 대하는 작가 의식의 미묘한 변화가 각 ‘질병’을 대상으로 하였을 때 더욱 선명하게 드러난다.

영문 초록

This study researched the thematic sense of cancer, stroke, and dementia which are the senescence diseases appearing in the novels by Park Wan-suh. Through this work, we were able to know the fact that those diseases are not just materials of the novels, but they keep various symbolical meanings and ironical properties. First, cancer in her novels does not function as the ordinary metaphorical sense of rapid spread or violence, but function as the sense of device for preparing noble death. This sense originates in the fact that the pace of cancer of old age is not rapid, and it is the disease being expected to die. The important property of stroke is the situation of body that it can not move as one wishes. The author shows an ironical aspects of the disease by contrasting the immovable body and the alive sexual desire. Moreover, the discord of body and spirit can be interpreted as suggesting the irony of our lives themselves. The disease dementia represents some images, the damage of self, and the destruction of personality, rather than the physical damage. The disease is a clue to reveal the hypocrisy and false awareness of the family members, as the hidden self of dementia patient is exposed through the situation of that disease. And, the roles of mother and daughter can be changed, so the daughter can understand her mother as human exactly, in virtue of the disease. The novels by Park Wan-suh show the diverse aspects of the old ages owing to its inherent pathological symbolism of the diseases, and highlight the irony of life especially. So, if we focus on the diseases appearing her novels, we may get to know the subtle change of Park's writer consciousness clearly, which appeared differently according to the year of announcement of her works.
