『만인보』가 호명한 여성과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고는 고은의 『만인보』에 등장하는 여성을 역사 속의 여성과 일상 속의 여성으로 대별하여 그 의미를 밝힌 논문이다. 전 30권에 이르는 방대한 텍스트에는 수많은 사람들의 이름이 호명되고 있지만 여성을 초점화한 연구 성과를 발견하기 어렵다. 본고가 『만인보』에 묘사된 여성에 집중하고자 하는 궁극적 이유는 소위 실천적 담론 생산자인 고은의 눈에 비친 여성의 실체가 궁금하기 때문이다. 이는 기왕의 연구에서 김남주나 박노해가 지닌 여성이미지의 실체를 구명했던 것의 연장선상이다. 『만인보』에는 많은 여성이 호명되고 있다. 작가는 역사 속의 여성들을 호명하지만 그들의 삶에 개입하지 않는다. 또 역사가 여성에게 결코 긍정적으로 작동하지 않은 것에 대해 비판하거나 전망을 내놓지 않는다. 다만 일제 강점기나 한국 전쟁과 같은 역사적 사건 안에서 고통을 겪은 여성들이 '있음'을 말할 뿐이다. 물리적 폭력이나 성적 폭력에 노출된 여성에 대한 서사도 유사하다. 『만인보』에는 때리는 남성에 대한 비난이나, 맞는 여성의 저항이나 분노 등이 드러나지 않는다. 작가는 폭력적 상황 아래 가해 남성이 '있다'는 것과 피해 여성이 '있다'라는 것을 드러내는 데 집중한다. 본 연구를 통해 『만인보』를 이해하는 매우 중요한 관점을 확정할 수 있게 되었다. 그것은 『만인보』가 말 그대로 '있는' 여성에 대한 서술이라는 점이다. 작가가 호명한 여성은 역사적 인물이기도 하고 민중이기도 하다. 그러나 『만인보』에 등장하는 여성은 말하지 않는다. 이것은 여성은 응시의 대상일 뿐, 응시의 주체는 대체적으로 남성이라는 것인데 이는 텍스트 내의 여성이 남성 화자에 의해 왜곡될 가능성을 안고 있다는 점에서 문제적이다.

영문 초록

This is the article that clarifies the substance of the image of women characters in Ko Un's Maninbo. It is difficult to find out the outcome of focusing on women even though a number of people's names are mentioned in the voluminous work of his 30 books. In addition, the ultimate reason this research tries to concentrate on the women described in Maninbo is that we wonder the substance of women seen by Ko Un, so called, a practical discussion producer. This is in line with the previous researches, where we tried to clarify the substance of women described by Kim Namju or Park Nohae. A lot of women are mentioned in Maninbo. The author mentions many women in the history, however, he does not intervene in their lives. Besides, he does not propose any prospect or alternative to the history that never acted positively for women. He simply tells that there 'exist' women who went through the pain during the historical events like the Japanese Rule or the Korean War. The narration of women who are exposed to physical or sexual violence is analogous. In Maninbo, the condemnation of the men hitting women or the women's wrath or resistance against them etc is not revealed. The author concentrates on revealing the fact that 'there exist' men, the perpetrators, and 'there exist' also women, the victims, in the cases of violence. Through the study, we were able to confirm the significant perspective of understanding Maninbo. It is that Maninbo is the mere narration about 'existent' women. The women the author mentioned are the people as well as historical figures. However, although plenty of women features in Maninbo, they are not narrators. It suggests that women are only objects stared at and the subjects staring at them are generally men, which could be a problem in that there is a chance the women in the text might be distorted by the male narrators.
