이응준 소설 『약혼』에 나타난 죽음 의식

국문 초록

이 논문은 이응준의 『약혼』에 나타난 다양한 죽음의 양상들을 세 가지 관점에서 분석하고 고찰한 것이다. 이응준의 죽음에 대한 인식은 단순히 소설의 소재 차원을 넘어선다. 그는 『약혼』에서 비극적이며 파괴적인 죽음의 모습들을 다루는 데 집중해 있다. 『약혼』에서 그려지는 죽음 가운데서 가장 많은 죽음의 유형은 자살이다. 그러나 뚜렷한 원인이나 죽음의 사유, 삶에 대한 고민의 흔적은 드러나지 않는다. 「어둠에 갇혀 너를 생각하기」의 승희처럼 그저 자살함으로써 현실로부터 탈주하는 문제적 개인을 구현하는 의미 있는 이정표를 제시할 뿐이다. 이는 존재 거부로의 죽음이며 탈주의 욕망을 지향하는 것이다. 작가에게 있어서 죽음에 대한 사유는 작품 내에서 예술적 자율성과 결합하며 작가의 존재방식이 된다. 또한, 『약혼』의 죽음 가운데는 파괴적이며 전복적인 죽음들도 발견된다. 무의미한 삶에 대한 절망으로 인한 죽음, 광기로 인한 자기 살해, 절망에 항거하는 수단으로서의 자살, 전략적 자살, 유행적 자살 등은 실패한 죽음이며 자유와 축제가 될 수 없는 파멸이다. 「약혼」에서의 병우와 해원의 죽음, 「내 어둠에서 싹튼 것」의 '그녀'의 죽음은 자존을 지켜내기 위한 이성적인 죽음이 아니라 파괴적이며 전복적인 죽음이다. 마지막으로, 『약혼』의 죽음들은 세속적 물질에 영혼과 정신을 소멸당한 무가치하고 의미 없는 삶에 지친 존재들의 죽음이다. 그들은 타락한 사회를 이겨내지 못하고 자멸해 버린다. 「내 어둠에서 싹튼 것」의 칠순 노인의 죽음과 「황성옛터」의 '현경'에 얽힌 죽음이 그렇다. 그들에게는 치열하게 살아 가야할 어떠한 희망이나 목적도 발견되지 않는다. 오염된 세상, 타락한 현실에 맞설 용기도 없는 그들의 죽음은 그래서 더욱 허무하다. 이처럼 『약혼』은 현실의 규범을 무화시키고, 일탈적이며 파괴적인 죽음의 형태들이 이응준의 소설을 관통하는 키워드임을 확인할 수 있다. 그의 소설에 나타난 죽음의 양상들은 삶을 소멸하기 위한 비극적이며 파괴적인 거리두기이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze and review a variety types of death on three features in Eungjun Lee's novels of 『The Engagement』. The most frequently found types of death in 『The Engagement』 is a suicide. However, any clear causes or reasons of death, or the trace of struggling agony over life were not uncovered. Just like Seunghee of 「Thinking about you while being stuck in the darkness」, only a meaningful milestone was presented to realize problematic individuals who were escaping from reality by committing a suicide. This is a death toward drive of death by denying existence and seeking for a desire of escape. In addition, destructive and subversive deaths were found in those of 『The Engagement』. They are failed deaths and destructions that cannot be a liberty and festival. Those are deaths caused by a despair of meaningless life, killing oneself, a suicide as a mean of resistance of despair, a death with a strategy, a death as a trend and so on. For example, Byeongwoo' death and Haewon's one in 「The Engagement」 and 'her' death in 「What springs up inside my darkness」 are not for reasonable deaths to defend self-esteem but just destructive and subversive ones. Finally, the deaths in 『The Engagement』 were existences' deaths whose lifes were exhausted due to meaningless and worthless life where their spirit and mind died off because of secular materials. The existences were self-destructed without being able to overcome corruptive society. For instance, a death of an old man of seventy years old in 「What springs up inside my darkness」 or the one of 'Hyeongyeong' in Hwangsung yettar (a historic site of ruined castle ruins) are those cases. In fact, there were no strong hope or purposes found for them to live fiercely with. Therefore, their deaths were even more empty as they had no courage to face contaminated and corruptive reality. As confirmed above, 『The Engagement』 cut off laws in reality. Furthermore, it was found that the key words of Eungjun Lee's novel were deviant and destructive deaths through out his novels. The features of death found in his novels were keeping distance catastrophically and destructively to go out of existence in life.
