최명희 단편소설 연구

국문 초록

본고는 최명희의 등단 후 단편소설을 대상으로 하여, 작중인물의 갈등 양상과 주제의식을 도출하고자 하였다. 또한 주제의식의 전개와 함께 작가의식의 지향성을 드러내고자 하였다. 단편소설을 분석한 결과 습작기 초기 단편들에서 보여주었던 ‘자아정체성 찾기’와 ‘민족정체성 찾기’가 지속적으로 드러나면서 확대되고 있음을 살펴보았다. 특히 작가는 ‘아버지의 부재’를 인식하면서 존재의 근원인 ‘뿌리 찾기’로 나아가고 있었으며, 민족 고유의 전통 복원과 ‘민족주체성 찾기’, ‘삶의 진정성 찾기’에 작가의식이 놓여있음을 고찰하였다. 특히 작가는 모국어에 대한 탐색과 이별의 정한을 ‘말’의 추상성과 구체성을 긴밀하게 결합시키면서 묘파하였다. 나아가 부조리한 현실과 사회제도적 모순 속에서 타자화된 개인들의 삶과 실존적 저항의식을 드러내고 있음을 파악하였다. 또한 절대적 존재자에 대한 경외감과 함께 기독교 학교의 부정적 행태를 고발하면서 인간의 선성(善性)에 대해 증명한다. 한편 남성중심의 가부장적 사회구조 속에서 타자화된 여성의 ‘자아정체성 찾아가기’에 집중하였음을 고찰하였다. 또한 자아의 갈등 양상과 실존적 허무의식을 상징과 은유, 환상성, 이미지의 탁월한 결합, 의식의 흐름 기법, 실험적 기법과 모던한 감각, 이종텍스트의 삽입, 시점의 일탈 등을 통하여 형상화하였다. 이렇게 최명희의 단편들은 ‘모국어 탐색’과 ‘자아정체성 찾기’와 ‘민족정체성 찾기’를 내포하고 있다는 점에서, ‘혼불 찾기’를 지향하는 작가의식과 맞닿아 있음을 고찰하였다. 즉 최명희의 단편소설에서 나타나는 주제의식과 표현방법은 장편 『魂불』을 통해 확장ㆍ심화되고 있었던 것으로, 최명희 문학의 실마리가 되고 있다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to derive the conflict patterns of characters in the stories and the themes of the short stories of Choi Myunghee. In addition, it aims to uncover the development of the themes and the directivity of the writer’s consciousness. The analysis of her short stories showed that ‘finding the self-identity’ and ‘finding the ethnic identity’ has been constantly revealed in her initial fragments. In particular, the writer recognized ‘the absence of the father,’ and went to ‘finding roots.’ This paper found that the writer’s consciousness lay in ‘finding the ethnic identity’ that restores tradition, and ‘finding the authenticity of life.’ In particular, this paper found that she thoroughly revealed the search for the mother tongue and the affection and grief of parting by combining the abstractness and concreteness of the ‘word.’ Furthermore, she revealed the lives of individuals who became others through absurd reality and social contradictions, and the existential resistance. In addition, by speaking about the awe toward the absolute being and exposing the wrongful practices of Christian schools, she proved the goodness of humans. Also, this paper found that she focused on ‘finding the self-identity’ of women, who were the ‘others’ in the male-centered patriarchal structure of society. In addition, she visualized the conflict patterns of selves and the existential sense of self-conscious vanity through symbols, metaphors, combinations of images, stream of consciousness, experimental techniques, modern sense, two kinds of texts, and the divergence of point. In this way, to the extent that the short stories of Choi Myunghee connote ‘the search for the mother tongue,’ ‘finding the self identity’ and ‘finding the ethnic identity,’ this paper found that her novels have come in contact with the writer’s consciousness toward ‘finding Honbul, death fire.’ In other words, the themes and expressions in her short stories are expanded and deepened in her novel, ‘Honbul,’ so it is worth taking notice of them, in that they are clues provided in her literature.
