국문 초록

밀란 쿤데라의 초기 소설들인 농담 , 생은 다른 곳에 , 이별의 왈츠는 1948년의 공산주의 혁명에서부터 1970년대 초반까지를 시대적인 배경으로 하여 전체주의 체제를 살아가는 사람들의 정체성의 문제와 관련된 실존적인 문제를 다루고 있는데, 주인공들이 정체성의 위기를 겪으면서 이들의 사랑도 우스꽝스러운 모습을 띠게 된다. 물론 세 소설에 등장하는 우스꽝스러운 사랑들은 다양한 형태의 모습으로 변주되어 나타나지만, 이들이 모두 전체주의 체제의 이데올르기와 불가분의 관계를 가진다는 점에서는 공통적이다. 전체주의 체제를 살아가는 연인들이 전체주의 체제가 그들에게 가하는 방식대로 혹은 이 상의 방식대로 사랑의 파트너에게 폭력과 전횡을 행사하고, 전체주의에 의해 권력을 빼앗긴 자들이 사랑의 파트너를 통해 빼앗긴 권력을 벌충하려 할 때 이들의 사랑은 왜곡되고 우스꽝스러울 수밖에 없다. 또한 주인공들이 사랑을 자신들의 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단으로 잘못 사용할 때, 그리고 육체와 정신이 분열을 일으켜 자신들의 육체와 정신을 제대로 제어할 수 없을 때, 이들의 사랑은 우스꽝스러운 사랑으로 전락한다. 물론 작가는 전체주의 이데올르기에 물들지도 않고 육체와 정신의 분열을 경험하지도 않는 사랑, 평범하면서도 순수하고 일상적이면서도 화합을 구가 하는 사랑들을 제시함으로써 소설의 균형을 유지한다.

영문 초록

Milan Kundera's early novels, that is, Žert (The Joke), Život je jinde (Life is Elsewhere), Valčík na rozloučenou (The Farewell Party) deal with the existential problems of the people who had lived their lives during the totalitarian eras from the Communist revolution of February, 1948 till the early 1970s. The people in the three novels are common in their bitter experiences with the totalitarian regime and in their coming to the identity crisis. In this identity crisis most of the loves of these novels turn into the laughable loves. A young student Markéta in The Joke who believes firmly in the Party ideology shows Ludvík's postcard to the Party leaders. The lyric poet Jaromil in Life is Elsewhere informs on the redhead's brother to the National Police, which causes simultaneously the arrest of the brother with the girl. Markéta and Jaromil put their preferences on the 'socialist duty' to their loves. Ludvík in The Joke uses Helena to revenge on her husband Zemánek who is responsible for his expulsion from the Party and the university. Růžena in The Farewell Party intimidates Klíma by calling him that she is pregnant. All of them make uses of their partners to attain their objects. The love between the ward Olga and Jakub in The Farewell Party is very comic because she seduces her protector successfully and turn him from father into lover simply so that she can feel the triumph of her will over circumstance. Contrary to triumphal Olga, Jakub feels unpleasant because of mental confusions. His soul goes far behind his body which gradually responds to Olga's active behavior. When making physical love with Helena, Ludvík orders his body to become the body of the absent third one to drive her body to the extreme convulsion for the 'beautiful act of demolition.' Almost all lovers in three novels, particularly male lovers, use violence on their partners. For their part, they were abused by the totalitarian Communist regime. So they are both tyrannized and tyrants. They tyrannize their partners, mostly weaker women, as much as the totalitarian regime tyrannize them. In this commic imitation their loves turn into absurd laughable loves.
