연암의 불교적 인식과 사유체계

국문 초록

이 글은 박지원 등 북학파 내지는 실학파들이 어떻게 기존의 지식을 거부하고 현실에 바탕을 둔 새로운 자기 생각을 형성해 갔는가를 살피기 위한 작업의 일환이다. 이들이 양명학적 학문취향을 가지고, 중국의 영향을 받았다는 기존의 논의와 함께, 기존 지식을 거부하는 역설적 사유방식의 뿌리를 불교적 인식론에서 찾을 수 있지 않을까 하는 가정 하에 그러한 증거들을 추적해 본 것이다. 이를 위하여 연암이 열하일기 등에서 보여준 불교적 사고방식을 검토해 보았다. 연암이 평면적 사고방식, 화이론적 대립의식에서 벗어나 입체적이고, 다면적인 사고를 형성해왔다는 것은 이미 학계에서 충분히 지적된 바 있으나 이런 사고의 전환에 불교적 사고가 작용하고 있다는 생각을 해 본 것이다. 그러나 이글은 필자의 불교사유체계에 대한 부족한 관점 때문에 그 의도를 충분히 살리지 못한 아쉬움이 있다.

영문 초록

YeonAm, Park Ji-won is known as a realist who tried to paradoxically think against Confucianism. It is not still revealed from which his paradoxical ideas came. Thus, it is to study the origin of Park Ji-won's ideas in terms of Buddhism perspectives. It could be difficult to imagine and further understand his Buddhist cognition because of his aspects as a realist. However, Buddhist logic had great effect on his taking new ideas and attitude far from his existing ones. During his visit in China, he recorded YulHaIlGi, in which he had much concern in Buddhism. To be sure, greatly influenced by Buddhism thought of equality, Park Ji-won tried to decline his existing thinking based on the antagonistic relationship between China and other races, human and animal, or man and woman. Furthermore, he threw away his egoistic thinking, made himself objectify, reviewed his existing ideas, and finally adopted his new ideas and attitude. As a result, he criticizes Chinese antagonistic politics. He also recognized the widening egoism of his self and his nation. These revolutionary thoughts might not be made out of the existing standardized thinking. Out of the uniform system of thoughts, he adopted the multiple perspectives. Then he changed his temporal ideas, regarding himself as a being in the present, not in the past. Thus, his new ideas and perspectives must be come from Buddhist cognition.
