영문 초록

In the course of nation-state building, the common identity as one nation people is important. The First and most impressive experience of one nation people was the experience of congregation of ten thousand(萬民共同會) in Korea. During a month congregation, people gathered without the old hierarchy and explored new horizontal solidarity. However, such a political movement ended in the failure of people and the empowerment of emperor. Brotherhood which developed through common political experience declined, but the rhetoric itself survived. The rhetoric of brotherhood, once quite political, lived discursive metamorphosis in 1900~04 period. Brotherhood became a negative term to express simple sympathy among people, and made the road to history. The epistemology of history was underdeveloped in 1894~1900. Whereas the horizontal solidarity was emphasized, the vertical solidarity through history was rarely developed. In 1900~04, the period of political retreat, the history as the identity origin was discovered for the first time. It made the spiritual and temporal identity of nation(民族) as much as the physical and spatial identity of state(國家), and its contribution revitalized in 1905~10. Then the rhetoric of brotherhood represented the unifying power of history and the negative strategy of history at the same time. As a figural word, 'brotherhood' expressed different stage of early modern period respectively.
