영문 초록

Hwang, Seok Young is a masculine and modern author having an obvious purpose on the epic plot. His viewpoint always converges on 'A Strange Land' and limited to the realistic achievement showed in it. This study started with a question about this statement. Thus, I investigated his literature based on his early novels such as 'Ga Hwa', 'A Pagoda', and 'A Returned Man', all of which are relatively unknown to the public. 'Golden Hill', a central space in 'Ga Hwa', reveals the dual aspects of the materialization; temptation and fear. Furthermore, there are forces found to nullify the boundaries between the reality and the fantasy, the real and the false, and the inside and the outside, and which are transformed to the point of new possibility. 'A Pagoda' is a story set in the Vietnamese War and it indicates the relationship between powerful countries and small countries, friends and enemies, and colonies and ruling governments, showing the 'possible' space where these relationships avoids the theory of adherence and fixed form. In 'A Returned Man', the career of the hero who had been decorated for bravery was ironically revealed through fantasy mechanism. The torture scene experienced in the middle of a fantasy can be regarded as a connection to the negative in that it functioned as a starting point of disclosure and reflection against the main violence. Therefore, the similarity found among these works is the dual aspects of the space. The reality/the fantasy, the genuine/the false, the offender/the victim, and the present/the past are all making various interpretative spaces pertinent to inconsistent agreement, double standards, anti-form, and anti-adherence. These duplicated spaces seek for new relations, rejecting the theory of existing dichotomy dominant to the space.
