영문 초록

The first edition of the new dictionary of Chinese Characters explained in Korean, Gookhanmun-shinokpyeon(1908), written by Chung, Ik-Ro(鄭益魯, 1863-1928) and introduced into the academic world in the first place through this article, has a very important position in the history of the compilation of wordbooks of Chinese characters explained in Korean. this dictionary was published at first in Korea among dictionaries of Chinese characters. Therefore, the study finds out about characteristics of this dictionary through the analysis of bibliography, complier's life and character, and the motive of complication. The new dictionary of Chinese characters explained in Korean, Gookhanmun-shinokpyeun(國漢文新玉篇), succeeded to the old Chinesecharacter dictionary, Jeonunokpyeon(全韻玉篇). However, it overcame the limitation of Jeonunokpyeon which didn't suggest information about Korean pronunciation and meaning of each Chinese character. It was a modern dictionary of Chinese characters in terms of explaining the pronunciation and meaning of each Chinese character in Korean after arranging title characters according to radicals, and making an index of pronunciation at first in the history of complication of dictionaries of Chinese characters. It was also evaluated as a modern type of dictionary in that it was published by a new printing method to distribute largely. The motive of the compilation of the dictionary could be found out through the compilator's lifetime achievements and evidential data. The compilator expected the popularization of modern new knowledge and the expansion of Christianity by the standardization of the Korean pronunciation and meaning of each Chinese character in order for many Korean people to read various books, written in Korean and Chinese characters together, which were published to meet the demand of educatee who were increased in number suddenly. He also compiled the dictionary to enlighten the ignorant people and inspire patriotism of Korean people for national independence. This indicated that the compilation of the dictionary met the needs of the ages. If the dictionary has a position as a first Korean modern dictionary of Chinese Characters explained in Korean, people should analyse the substantial contents overcoming and succeeding to the traditional Chinese-character dictionaries. In addition, people should analyse the influence of the dictionary to the later dictionaries such as Jajeonseokyo(字典釋要), Hanseonmun-shinokpyeon(漢鮮文新玉編) and Shinjajeon(新字典) in detail. This is a very important assignment in the history of the development of dictionaries of Chinese characters explained in Korean. Therefore, further studies will be continued about this.
