중국 ‘경기장 외교(stadium diplomacy)’의 담론 분석 - 서구와 중국의 미디어 보도를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 지난 60여 년간 중국이 국제 외교에서 창출하고 활용한 ‘경기장 외교(stadium diplomacy)’ 정책이 국제무대에서 광범위한 토론을 불러일으킨 점에 주목하였다. 미디어들이 어떤 방식으로 이를 서술하고 평가하는지 소개하고 분석하며, 나아가 미디어들이 국제 정치 관계와 국제무대에서 경기장 외교 정책을 논하는 담론 패턴을 심층적으로 분석하고 논의하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 연구는 두 가지 주요 범주로 나뉜다. 첫째, 서구의 주요 영어 미디어의 중국 경기장 외교 보도를 정리하고 소개하며, 서구 미디어의 중국 경기장 외교에 대한 평가 동향, 담론 구조, 그리고 국제 정치 관계 변화가 중국 경기장 외교에 미치는 영향 등을 해석한다. 둘째, 중국 국내 주요 영어 미디어의 중국 경기장 외교 관련 보도를 정리하고 소개하며, 그러한 보도가 중국 사회 속에서 어떠한 의미와 함의를 매개하고 생성하는지를 해석한다. 다음으로, 본 연구는 두 미디어의 담론 패턴의 차이를 종합적으로 해석하고 그러한 미디어 담론의 실제가 작게는 스포츠 외교 크게는 국제정세 아래에서 어떠한 의미가 있는 것인지 등을 논의한다. 끝으로, 우리는 몇 가지 제언을 결론 삼아 이 연구를 마무리하였다.

영문 초록

This study noted that the “stadium diplomacy” policy created and utilized by China in international diplomacy over the past 60 years has sparked widespread discussion on the international stage. It aims to introduce and analyze how media describe and evaluate them, and further analyze and discuss in-depth discourse patterns in which media discuss international political relations and foreign policy on the international stage. This study is divided into two main categories. First, it summarizes and introduces major Western English media’s diplomatic reports on Chinese stadium diplomacy, collects and presents the impact of Western media’s evaluation trends, discourse structure, and changes in international political relations on Chinese stadium diplomacy. Second, it summarizes and introduces major domestic English media’s reports on Chinese stadium diplomacy, and explains how major domestic English media in China build the characteristics and values of their stadium diplomacy on the international stage. The study concludes that Western English media’s diplomatic articles on Chinese stadium diplomacy are deeply imbued with Western-centeredness and hegemonicism. On the other hand, the mainstream Chinese English-language media’s reports on Chinese arena diplomacy were heavily influenced by nationalism. Finally, this study aims to provide implications for how China can better establish its diplomatic image internationally in the future through the analysis of media reports related to Chinese stadium diplomacy. The author believes that efforts should be made to break away from this framework of confrontational media and find commonalities and dialogue mechanisms between China and the West. The Western narrative of “authoritarianism” and China’s tone of “nationalism” overlook the potential of sports diplomacy or stadium diplomacy to bring peace and cooperation as a new form of interaction in international relations. To avoid simple patterns of confrontation, it is necessary to understand and explain China’s stadium diplomacy through a more balanced narrative and neutral analysis.
