국문 초록

인류는 금속의 물질적 속성과 상태 변화에 관계한 새로운 지식과 기술을 축적해 나감으로써 물품을 다변화해 왔다. 특히 불을 사용한 제련법을 익히면서부터 금속의 물질적 특성이 변화하는 과정을 이해하기에 이르렀고, 그에 따른 파급효과로 다른 소재로 제작되던 사물들이 차츰 금속으로 변환되기 시작했다. 더불어 선진화된 금속 가공법을 개발해 다양한 사물 제작에 활용하였다. 1920년대 막스 에른스트에 의해 창시된 추상표현주의의 대표 기법인 프로타주의 특성에 관한 이해를 바탕으로 금속 주물의 표면 장식을 위한 수단으로 활용할 방법을 연구했다. 이를 통해 실험적 표현이 새롭게 시도된 주조 기물 제작법을 제안하고자 한다. 수종에 따라 개성이 제각각인 나무껍질을 대상으로 프로타주를 시도해 수피에 내제된 생명력과 시간의 서사를 기물 안으로 옮겨오고자 했다. 판형 소프트 왁스를 모형 제작에 도입함으로써, 주조 작업에 곧바로 적용할 방안을 찾았다. 색에 의한 간섭의 정도가 덜한 은을 주물의 소재로 사용해 기물의 요철과 질감에 보다 주목하도록 유도했다. 프로타주를 통해 수피 무늬가 형상화된 주조 기물을 제작하는 창의적 도전으로부터 유의미한 결과를 도출한 것에 의의를 두며, 타 장르의 주요 기법을 금속공예에 접목하는 다양한 후속 연구로 이어질 마중물로 역할하기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Throughout history, humanity has accumulated knowledge about metals, their material properties and phase changes. The resulting acquisition of new metallurgical technologies has always led to diversification of human material culture. Application of heat, in a process we now call smelting, enabled first explorations in changing properties of metals, and eventually led to substitution by metal of objects that were once made of other materials. Further development of advanced metallurgical processes accelerated this process, allowing metals to be used in production of many objects we find today. This paper zooms into the technique of frottage, an iconic technique of abstract expressionism that was developed by Max Ernst in the 1920s. By exploring properties of frottage as a technique, I develop ways to utilize this technique for decorating surfaces of cast vessels. In doing so, the paper argues for new, experimental expressions in cast vessels. Specifically, I turn to barks of various tree that represent unique characteristics of each species. I tried to transfer the vitality and temporal narratives embodied within the barks onto cast vessels, by applying frottage technique on the barks. I developed a technique for directly translating frottage work onto casts, which involved using soft wax sheets in the modelling process. Silver was the metal of choice, as its low interference with color allowed me to emphasize the textural elements. As a result of this innovative experiment, I was able to successfully create cast vessels with tree bark patterns. The significance of this paper lies not only in reporting this successful outcome, but also in providing a catalytic inspiration for future innovations in artistic metalwork.
