페라나칸(Peranakan) 가구를 통해 본 창덕궁 대조전 가구의 양식 특성

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 창덕궁 대조전에 전하는 중국 가구들의 현황을 조사하고, 양식 특성을 분석하여 근대 한국에 유입된 외래문화의 일면을 밝혀 보았다. 그동안 창덕궁 대조전의 중국 가구에 대한 조사 및 연구가 거의 없었기 때문에 조선의 왕실 가구와는 확연히 다른 양식의 중국 가구들이 근대 한국의 궁궐에 유입되었던 배경과 구체적인 양식 특성에 대한 연구가 필요한 실정이었다. 이에 본 연구자는 창덕궁 대조전에 소장되어있는 중국 가구에 대한 열람 및 조사를 실시하였으며, 이를 기초자료로 하여 창덕궁 대조전의 중국 가구들이 동남아시아 페라나칸의 가구와 동일한 양식 특성을 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. 먼저 창덕궁 대조전의 중국 가구들이 궁궐에 유입되었던 배경을 파악하기 위해 근대 통상자료의 기록을 살펴보았고, 이를 통해 창덕궁 대조전의 중국 가구들이 중국의 수출항이었던 상해나 광동에서 조선 정부가 직접 구입하거나 중국 상인들에 의해 조선에 유입되었음이 파악되었다. 그 다음으로 페라나칸의 주거문화와 가구의 특성을 살펴봄으로써 창덕궁 대조전의 가구들이 전형적인 중국 가구의 구조에 대리석, 자개 등의 소재를 활용하여 꽃, 새, 나비 등의 길상 문양을 장식한 페라나칸 가구만의 독특한 조형 특성을 가지고 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the state of Chinese furniture transmitted through the Changdeokgung Palace Daejojeon Hall and analyzes its stylistic characteristics, aiming to shed light on the external cultural influences that have entered modern Korea. Previously, there have been very few studies or investigations into the Chinese furniture at the Changdeokgung Palace Daejojeon Hall, making it necessary to research the background of how distinctively styled Chinese furniture, different from the furniture of the Joseon royal palace, was introduced into modern Korean palaces and its specific stylistic. To this end, the researcher conducted a review and survey of the Chinese furniture housed in the Changdeokgung Palace Daejojeon Hall, using it as a basis, and confirmed that the Chinese furniture at the Changdeokgung Palace Daejojeon Hall has the same stylistic characteristics as the Peranakan furniture of Southeast Asia. To understand the background of the Chinese furnishings that were first introduced into the palace, we first examined records from trade data and found that the Chinese furnishings in the palace were directly purchased by the Joseon government in Shanghai or Guangdong, which were China's export ports, or brought into Joseon by Chinese merchants. The study found, through comparative research, that the furniture of Changdeokgung Palace Daejojeon Hall possessed distinctive stylistic traits that were typical of Chinese furniture structures, using materials such as marble and mother-of-pearl and embellished with floral, bird, butterfly, and other aesthetically pleasing characteristics, which are inherent to Peranakan furniture.
