전통 지우산(紙雨傘)을 활용한 공예 제품 디자인 연구

국문 초록

고대 사회 우산은 높은 신분을 표상하는 시각적인 상징물로 오랫동안 사용되었다. 우산을 펴고 접는 기본 구조는 현재에도 큰 변화 없이 지속되고 있지만, 한국 우산은 역사적으로 각 시대의 생활양식과 사회 문화적 맥락에 상응하는 용도에 따라 조금씩 변화되는 양상을 보였다. 구한말 개항기를 기점으로 처음 등장한 서양 우산은 높은 휴대성을 바탕으로 우산의 대중적 유행을 선도하였다. 실용성과 대중성을 모두 갖춘 외래 우산의 영향을 받아 전통 지우산은 크기, 구조 및 소재의 변화를 시도하였으나, 완벽한 방수 기능의 인조 소재와 초경량 금속 뼈대로 대량 생산된 현대 우산에 밀려 결국 단절되었다. 본 연구는 한국 우산의 역사와 변화 과정의 고찰을 토대로, 한국 지우산 제작 기법을 활용하여 현대인의 생활양식에 적합한 지우산 공예 제품 디자인을 제안하고 시제품을 제작하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 철기 시대부터 광복 전후까지의 우산 사료 조사를 바탕으로 한국 우산의 역사와 변화 과정에 대한 이론적 고찰을 진행하였다. 또한 서양 우산의 유입으로 형태와 재료가 변화하던 한국 전통 지우산이 단절된 배경을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 전라북도무형문화재 윤규상이 복원한 전통 지우산 작품을 분석하여 세 가지 현재적 가치를 도출하였다. 이를 기준으로 실내에서 많은 시간을 보내는 현대인에게 지우산의 현재적 가치를 시각적 경험으로 제공하기 적합한 실내용 벽걸이 지우산 <조각우산>을 제시하였고, 끝으로 전통 지우산 재료와 제작 공정을 활용하여 시제품을 제작하고 제품성을 검증하였다. 우산 내부에 설치가 가능한 소형 LED 조명을 별도로 설계하여 사용자가 어두운 실내 환경에서도 <조각우산>을 사용할 수 있게 하였다. 무형유산은 수천 년 넘게 자연과 공존하며 인간의 손으로 탄생시킨 기물의 변화 과정을 담고 있다. 생활양식과 가치관의 변화를 고려한 디자인 연구를 바탕으로 향후 국내 무형유산 제작 기술을 활용한 공예 제품의 창조적 계승에 보탬이 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Umbrella, from ancient society, has long been used as a visual symbol to represent high status. Although the basic structure of opening and folding the umbrella continues without significant change, traditional Korean umbrella have changed its form slightly depending on its historical uses corresponding to the changes in lifestyle and sociocultural context. Western umbrella, first appeared in late 19th century, led the popular trend based on high practicality and personal use. Influenced by portable Western umbrella, traditional Korean umbrella attempted to match its popularity by changing its size, structure and materials, but was unsuccessful and eventually became discontinued. The purpose of this study is to propose a new umbrella design concept using the traditional Korean umbrella craft technique, and to produce a functional prototype suitable for indoor modern lifestyle based on the historical changes of Korean umbrella. First, a theoretical review of the history and the changes in Korean umbrella was conducted from Iron age to modernizing period in Korea. Reasons for the various shape changes leading to discontinuation of traditional Korean umbrella after the influx of Western umbrella was also examined. Next, by analyzing the traditional Korean umbrella restored by Yoon Kyu-sang, an intangible cultural property for Chullabuk-do, three core values were derived which may be suitable for today’s increased indoor lifestyle. Based on the three values, an indoor wall mount design concept was proposed in order to maximize the visual experience. Finally, a prototype was successfully produced utilizing the traditional Korean umbrella materials and the manufacturing process, verifying its product feasibility. In addition, LED light specific to was designed in order to be used in the dark indoor environment. Intangible cultural heritage provides a deep insight into the process of handmade objects in connection to nature. This study is expected to contribute to the future research and development of new craft products utilizing the traditional craft manufacturing technique derived from the Korean intangible heritage.
