다의어 ‘바람’의 인지적 의미 연구

국문 초록

사물을 인지하고 의미를 생성확장해가는 방식 등과 관련된 한국인들의 정신세계를 이해하기 위해서 원형이론을 중심으로 ‘바람’의 다의적 의미를 살펴보았다. 한국인들이 인지하는 ‘바람’의 원형적 양상은 ‘기압의 변화’, ‘공기’, ‘움직임’, ‘세기’ 등의 성질을 지니고 있는 ‘산들바람’이 전형적인 ‘바람’의 보기로 인지되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 ‘바람’의 의미확장은 대체로 ‘유사성’에 바탕을 둔 은유적 확장을 통하여 이루어지며, 그러한 확장은 <구체성 → 추상성>, <물리적 → 사회적 → 심리적>, <일반성 → 비유성 → 관용성> 등의 일정한 방향성을 가지고 진행되는 것을 확인하였다. ‘바람’의 의미구조는 원형의미에서 7단계의 의미확장을 거쳐 다의관계를 형성하며 계층적 구조를 이루고 있다. 그리고 ‘바람’의 원형의미와 확장의미간에는 비대칭적 특성이 나타나는데, 이는 구조적 측면에서는 원형의미가 확장의미보다 문법적 제약을 거의 받지 않고, 빈도적 측면에서는 높은 사용빈도수를 나타내며, 인지적 측면에서는 확장의미보다 더 빠르고 단순하게 언어사용자들이 인지하고 있음을 의미하는 것이다.인지의미론적 접근방식을 통한 어휘의미에 대한 연구는 언어의 사용과 이해에 관한 한국인들의 정신세계를 이해하는데 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라 구체적으로 학교교육에서 어휘교육과 관련한 다양한 학습모형 및 자료를 개발하는데 매우 유용할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the diverse meanings of 'Wind' focused on 'Prototype Theory' to understand the Korean people's mental structure which is related with the way of perceiving things, and generating and extending the meaning of it. When it comes to the prototypic aspect of 'Wind' which Korean perceive, a 'breeze' is recognized as a typical example of 'Wind' , which means 'the change of air pressure', 'air', 'movement', 'degree of strength' and so on. It is also identified that the meaning expansion of 'Wind' is usually achieved through metaphoric extension based on an 'analogy' and the expansion is advanced with constant directions such as , , . The meaning structure of 'Wind' is formed a hierarchy which consists of polysemy relations generated by 7-step meaning expansions from the prototype meaning. And the asymmetric characteristic is shown between the prototype and extended meanings of 'Wind', which suggests the prototype meaning is less confined than the extended meaning in the structural respect and is more used than the extended one in the frequency respect and is perceived by language users faster and easier than the extended one in the perceptive respect. The study on the meaning of vocabularies by the cognitive semantic approach will not only help understand the Korean people's mental structure about the language use and understanding, but also assist teachers to develop the various teaching models and authentic materials related with the vocabulary teaching at school.
