국문 초록

라인홀드 니버의 논의는 심각한 갈등 사회 가운데서 있는 한국 사회가 새겨보아야 할 사회윤리적 논의들을 담고 있다. 개인윤리의 연장선상에서가 아니라, 기독교적 인간이해를 바탕으로 견제와 균형을 통한 윤리적 목표 달성을 추구한 사회윤리학자 니버는 정의에 대해 무엇을 말하고 있는가? 필자는 라인홀드 니버의 정의 이해를 설명하기 위해서 기독교현실주의, 사회윤리방법론, 사랑과 정의의 변증법이란 세 가지 측면에서 논의를 전개하였다. 첫째로, 기독교현실주의는 다양한 종류의 이상주의에 대한 비판에서 시작하여 기독교적 인간관과 사회이해를 윤리의 바탕에 두고 있다. 감상적 차원이 아니라 개인과 사회가 처한 정치적 상황에서 제거할 수 없는 현실이 무엇인가를 파악하고, 다양한 대결과 분쟁에 있어서 근본적으로 뚜렷한 힘을 갖는 것이 무엇인지에 주목한다. 니버는 사회, 정치적 상황에 있어서 모든 요소들이 자기 이익과 힘의 요소에 의해 제정된 규범들에 저항하는 경향을 갖고 있다고 보았다. 둘째로, 사회윤리의 기본적인 주제는 인간 사회 형성에서의 도덕적 옳음과 선이다. 그러나 여기에 그치지 않고 사회윤리는 개인과 사회의 ‘관계’를 다룬다. 개인의 도덕적 의식이나 도덕성이 사회 혹은 사회적 시스템의 도덕성이나 비도덕성과 불가분의 관계를 가지고 있다. 단순한 개인윤리의 연장선에서가 아니라 힘의 견제와 균형을 사용한 윤리적 실천이 필요하다. 셋째로, 정의는 사랑과 분리되어 생각될 수 없다. 정의는 항상 아가페 사랑과 변증법적인 관계에 있을 때 의미를 갖게 되는 것이다. 정의는 서로 이기심이 상충하는 죄악된 사회에서 형제의식을 근사치로 실현하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 사랑과 정의는 현실사회 속에서 변증법적 관계 가운데 발전해 갈 수 있다.

영문 초록

Reinhold Niebuhr's works contain social ethical discussions that the Korean society in the midst of social conflicts should consider. What does Niebuhr say, a social ethicist who pursues social ethical goals through checks and balances based on a Christian understanding of human nature about justice? This paper mainly deals with three aspects of Christian ethics: Christian realism, social ethical methodology, and dialectics of love and justice. First, Christian realism begins with criticism of various types of idealism, and is based on Christian understanding of humans and society. Not at the sentimental level, but at the political situation of individuals and society, this paper takes notice of what in reality cannot be removed and pays attention to what fundamentally has distinctive power. Niebuhr sees that all factors in social and political situations tend to resist norms established by elements of self-interest and power. Second, the basic theme of social ethics is the moral righteousness and goodness in the formation of human society. However, social ethics does not stop here but deals with the 'relationship' between individuals and society. An individual's moral consciousness and morality have an inseparable relationship with social morality or the social system. Third, justice cannot be considered separate from love. Justice always has meaning when dealing with a dialectical relationship with the Agape love. Justice can be seen as realizing an approximation of the brotherhood in a sinful society, where selfishness conflicts with each other. Love and justice can develop in a dialectical relationship in real society.
