가짜 뉴스에 대한 언어 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 가짜 뉴스(fake news)에 대하여 언어학적으로 접근해 칼럼니스트들이 주요 이슈에 대해 견해를 담는 신문 시사 칼럼 표현의 문제점을 살펴보려는 것이다. 이연구로 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 가짜 뉴스라는 용어는 영어의 fake를 번역해 사용하는 말이기 때문에 정확히 설명하기는 어렵다. 학계에서도 ‘가짜 뉴스’ 용어에 대한 의견이 분분하다. 본 연구에서는가짜 뉴스를 ‘사실에 근거하지 않은, 사실과 조금이라도 다른 모든 뉴스’로 확대한다. 이러한 가짜 뉴스의 프레임을 생성하는 대표적 언어적 기제는 피동형 표현, 익명표현을 들 수 있다. 피동형과 익명은 독자가 쉽게 서술의 주체를 파악하지 못하는 경우가 종종 나타난다. 즉 실체나 사실 관계를 확인하기 어려운 표현 행태이다. 피동형과 익명은 사실성을 흐리게 하고 이해관계를 반영할 수 있다는 점에서 의견을 묻힌윤색적 표현이다. 이에 피동형과 익명은 문장의 주체를 확인하기가 쉽지 않아 주장을신뢰하기 어렵다. 본 연구의 대상인 신문의 칼럼은 사실을 바탕으로 주장을 펼치는 글이다. 따라서사실을 바탕으로 의견을 담는 시사 칼럼에서 실체를 확인하기 어려운 피동표현과 행동의 주체를 밝히지 않는 익명 표현은 대중에게 가짜 뉴스의 문법으로 활용 될 수 있으므로 적절한 언어로 볼 수 없다.

영문 초록

This study takes a linguistic approach to fake news, examining the issues with expressions used by columnists when writing their views about key current affairs in newspaper columns. The results of the study are as follows. The term “fake news” in Korean is a direct translation of the English expression, so there is a limit to how well we can accurately define it’s meaning. The academic community is also split on the use of this term. This study expands the definition of fake news to include “all news that are not based on the truth, or that stray even the slightest bit from the truth”. Typical linguistic mechanisms that are used to create the frame for fake news are anonymity and the passive form of expression. These two methods occasionally lead to situations where readers experience difficulty identifying the narrator of a text. In other words, they are forms of expression that blur out truths and facts. Anonymity and the passive form of expression are embellishments in the sense that they obscure truths and can reflect mutual interests. Due to the fact that subjects of a sentence are difficult to identify when these expressions are used, arguments in such forms lack credibility. The subject of this research are newspaper columns, which develop arguments based on facts. Columns on current affairs that use passive forms of expressions, which obscure the truth, and anonymity, which does not clarify the subject of an action, pose the risk of being utilized as fake news targeting the public, and therefore cannot be regarded as appropriate language.
