김정한 소설에 나타난 (탈)개발의 미망과 땅의 정치성

국문 초록

이 글은 김정한 소설에 나타난 땅, 거처와 같은 인간 삶의 물리적 기반에 초점을 두고, 그것이 역사적으로 한국사회의 공간성을 만들어온 ‘개발’ 담론에서 비가시화되어있는 속성을 갖고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 개발은 한국이라는 공간의 물리적 변동을추동한 산업화·도시화 과정과 관련해 대체로 자본주의 이데올로기를 실현하거나 그작동 자체를 문제적으로 일컫는 말이지만, 넓게는 발전·성장·속도제일주의를 토대로개별적이고도 집단적인 주체성을 구조화하고 포획하는, 다양한 층위의 파행적 근대화의 양상을 포착하는 말이기도 하다. 그러나 개발이 지닌 이 같은 부정적 의미망에도 불구하고 김정한 소설에서 그것은 비판의 대상으로 단순화되어 있지 않다. 김정한은 개발을 가진 자와 못 가진 자를 대립시키는 원리로 그리지 않고, 그러한 대립적 관계를 설정하는 것으로서의 ‘개발’이라는 이름에 쉽게 환원되지 않는 다른 주체들과관계들을 형상화한다. 「제3병동」은 개발의 바깥, 뒤, 혹은 아래에서 사라지는 주체들을 조명하면서, 변모하는 도시 공간을 병든 몸 또는 죽음의 공간으로 포착하고, 「인간단지」는 땅이 ‘인간’ 이라는 성원권의 문제임을 강조하면서 이러한 ‘땅’의 의미를 다시 쓰려는 몸(들)의 (불) 가능성을 그린다. 두 소설 모두 ‘개발’의 의미를 재고하는 데에서 나아가 개발 대상으로서의 ‘땅’의 소유와 권리가 무엇을 목적으로 해야 하는지에 대한 탐색을 촉구한다. 이는 오늘날 ‘소유권’이라는 무소불위의 권능으로 땅의 전 속성이 귀속되어 있는 사회적·법적 현실에 문제제기하는, 우리 문학이 가진 하나의 정치적 거점이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on the physical basis of human life such as land and residence in Kim Jeong-han’s novels. It also notes that such basis has an invisible property in the discourse of “development” that has historically created the spatiality of Korean society. Development refers to the realization or operation of capitalist ideology in relation to the industrialization and urbanization processes that have created spatial changes in Korea. The word also captures the disruptive modernization patterns at various levels that create and capture individual and collective subjectivity based on development and growthism. However, in Kim Jeong-han’s novels, development is not simplified as an object of criticism. Kim Jeong-han does not paint development as a principle of substituting “having” and “not having,” but embodies relationships with other subjects that are not easily reduced to “development” by establishing such a confrontational relationship. The novel The 3rd Ward captures the transformation of urban space as a sick body or a space of death, paying attention to the subjects who disappear outside, behind, or underneath development. Meanwhile, The Human Complex emphasizes that land is a matter of right to humans, and depicts the body’s impossibility of rewriting the meaning of “land.” Both novels go beyond reconsidering the meaning of “development” to explore what the purpose of ownership and rights to “land” as a development target should be. This can be considered the political base of our literature against the social and legal reality under which the entire property of the land belongs to the power of “ownership” today.
