국문 초록

대한민국은 최근 수년간 합계출산율이 1보다 낮게 하락중이고, 전 세계에서 합계출산율이 가장 낮은 등 심각한 저출산 문제에 직면해 있다. 이 연구에서는 청년패널조사 10, 11, 12, 및 13차원자료를 사용하여 한국 청년의 희망 자녀수가 가구소득 및 개인저축과 어떻게 연관되는지 분석한다. 누락변수 편의문제를 최소화하기 위해 패널 고정효과 모형으로 분석을 수행했다. 분석 결과에 따르면 청년 개인의 희망 자녀수는 개인저축과 정의 관계를 보였으나, 이러한 관계는 결혼 후에는 사라졌다. 희망 자녀수와 가구 소득의 관계는 부의 관계로 나타났으나, 추정계수의 값이 작고 표준오차가 커서 전반적으로 불분명했다. 가구 소득과 희망 자녀수의 관계 역시 결혼 후에는 사라졌다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 한국 사회에서 결혼과 자녀출산의 결정에는 결혼 전 충분한 저축을 통한 자산축적이 중요함을 시사한다. 이러한 효과는 남성과 여성 모두에게 공통으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 한국이 당면한 저출산 문제 해결을 위한 정책 설계에 유용한 정보를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 자녀출산 수요에 대해 분석하는 경제학 연구문헌과 희망 자녀수 등 출산의향의 결정요인에 대해 살펴보는 인구학 연구문헌을 한국의 사례를 이용한 새로운 분석결과를 제시하여 확장하는 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

South Korea currently faces a serious low birth-rate problem. The total fertility rate of Korea has decreased below 1, recording the lowest level in the world. We analyze the relationship between economic factors, such as household income and personal saving, and the expected fertility of the Korean youth using the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th micro data of the Youth Panel. We employ a panel fixed-effect model considering possible omitted variable biases. Our findings show that the expected fertility of the Korean youth is positively associated with personal saving, but the positive relationship between the two variables disappeared after marriage. The association between household income and expected fertility was estimated negative, although small and unclear. This association also disappeared after marriage. These findings imply that wealth accumulation by saving before marriage is a significant determinant of marriage and child birth in the Korean society. We contribute to both the economics literature researching the demand for children and demographic studies literature examining the determinants of fertility intent by presenting novel findings from the Korean case.
