장기(長鬐) 유배기 다산(茶山) 시의 향방(向方)과 성격

국문 초록

다산 정약용은 1801년의 신유사옥에 연루되어 경상도 장기에서 220여 일 동안 유배의 삶을 살았다. 실질적인 첫 유배였던 장기 유배가 다산 삶의 변곡점이 되었다는 점에서, 이 시기 다산 시의 향방과 성격을 살피는 것은 다산 시문학 전체를 이해하는 데에도 필요하고 중요한 일이다. 다산은 장기에 머무는 세 계절 동안 60제 160수의 시를 남겼는데, 이 시기 다산은 새로운 환경에 대한 경험과 백성의 어려움에 대한 관심이 담긴 향외적(向外的) 시선의 시보다는 유배라는 자기 문제에 대한 향내적(向內的) 시선의 시를 더 많이 썼다. 비자발적 격리 상태에 있던 다산은 시를 통해 자신의 그리움과 향수, 비애와 비탄 등을 지속적으로 드러내며, 특히 정조 시절과 한양에 대한 회고와 회상의 정서를 특징적으로 보여준다. 유배는 백성의 삶을 보다 가까이에서 살필 수 있는 기회였지만, 백성의 삶에 대한 관심과 고민이 이 시기 다산의 시에는 예상보다 완곡하게 나타난다. 백성의 삶에 대해 유배 이전보다 현실적으로 인식하게 된 것은 확인되지만, 이 시기 다산에게는 백성의 어려움에 대한 각성보다는 자신의 현재 처지에 대한 고심이 더 컸던 것이다. 시를 통해 보자면, 장기에 있는 동안 다산은 유배의 충격 속에서 자신의 문제에 몰두해 있었다. 백성의 삶에 대해서도 이전보다 현실적으로 인식하게는 되었으나, 세계에 대한 적극적이고 비판적인 관심을 시에 드러내지는 않았다. 경세가이자 비판적 지식인인 다산에게도 유배의 충격은 그만큼 컸던 것이다. 그 충격이 완화되기도 전에 다산은 서울로 소환되었고 강진으로 다시 유배되었다. 그러나, 장기 유배기를 통해 시작된 백성의 삶에 대한 실질적이고 현실적인 경험과 인식은 이후 비판적 각성으로 구체화되어 강진 유배기에는 현실 비판적인 시로 형상화 된다.

영문 초록

Dasan Jeong Yak‐yong was involved in the Shinyu‐Saok in 1801 and lived an exile life for 220 days in Janggi, Gyeongsang‐do province. In that the Janggi exile, which was practically the first exile for him, became an inflection point in Dasan s life, it is necessary and important to understand the whole Dasan poetry to investigate the direction and character of Dasan’s poems during this period. Dasan left 160 works of poems in 60 themes during the three seasons of his stay at Janggi, and he wrote more poems from the introverted (向內的) perspective about his issues called exiles than poems from the extroverted (向外的) perspective, which contained concerns about the difficulties of folks and experiences of the new environment. Dasan, who was in involuntary isolation, continued to reveal his longing and nostalgia, woe and lament through his poems, and in particular, he characteristically showed the sentiments of retrospection and reminiscing about the days of King Jeongjo and Hanyang. The exile was an opportunity to get a closer look at the life of folks, but the concern and agony for folks’ life is more euphemistic than expected in Dasan s poems from this period. Although it is confirmed that folks’ lives have become more realistic than before his exile, but at this time, Dasan s awareness of the difficulties of the folks was no greater than his concerns about his own current situation. While at Janggi, Dasan was preoccupied with his issues amid the shock of his exile. The folks life became more realistic than before, but it was difficult for him to express an active and critical interest in the world in his poems. For Dasan, a statesman and critical intellectual, the impact of exile was just as great. Even before the shock could be alleviated, Dasan was summoned to Seoul and exiled back to Gangjin. The practical and realistic experience of the folks life inherited internally through the Janggi period was embodied as a critical awakening through the Gangjin exile period afterwards and appeared as realistic critical poems.
