서정주 시집『질마재 神話』의 마을서사와 승화의 메커니즘

국문 초록

이 글은 서정주의 제 6시집『질마재 神話』(1975)가 서정주 시의 정수를 담고 있을 뿐만 아니라 ‘고전’이라고 불릴 만한 힘을 갖고 있다는 판단 아래, 그 중요한 원인 가운데 하나가 이 시집을 구성하는 마을서사와 승화의 기제 속에 깃들여 있다는 점을 밝히고자 하는 데 뜻이 있다. 『질마재 神話』는 서정주의 직전의 시집『冬天』(1968)과 서로 짝을 이루면서 서정주 시의 정수를 이치와 현실, 상상과 실제의 측면에서 구현하고 있다.『질마재 신화』에 내재된 마을서사와 승화의 기제는 이런 점을 잘 보여주고 있거니와 이는 인간생존사 속에서 일종의 ‘인간무리’로 시작된 마을의 현실을 사실적으로 직시하면서 그것을 다양하고도 차원 높은 정신에 의하여 해결하고 고양시켜 나아가는 모습을 지니고 있다. 『질마재 신화』 속의 마을서사는 현실 문제를 기준으로 하여 분류할 때 장애서사와 질병서사, 생계서사와 생활서사, 성애서사와 혼인서사, 교육서사와 교우서사로 나뉠 수 있다. 여기서 현실적인 문제는 서사의 출발점이 되는데 이는 마침내 승화의 기제에 의하여 해결되고 치유됨으로써 당사자를 포함한 마을 전체의 안녕과 유지, 성장과 성숙을 가져오게 된다. 『질마재 신화』의 마을서사가 지닌 구조적 특성은 방금 말한 현실적인 문제와 승화의 기제가 서사 속에서 함께 혼융되며 다중적인 관계성을 만들어내고 있다는 점이다. 그 가운데서도 특별히 승화의 기제는 매우 탁월한 수준과 방법으로 서사의 구조적인 측면뿐만 아니라 그 내용 전체를 건강한 긴장과 감동의 장으로 들어올린다. 『질마재 신화』에 내재된 승화의 주요 기제는 기존에 많이 언급되곤 했던 공동체의식과 윤리의식을 비롯하여 敬天사상과 下心의 정신, 우주적 진실과 무경계의식, 무위의 세계와 무한 및 무변의식, 형이상학적 믿음과 비가시적 세계의 상상 및 의미화 등, 그 정신의 수준이 매우 높고 승화의 힘이 강력하다. 그리고 이 같은 토대 위에서 발생하는 웃음의 힘 또한 승화의 기제로 중요한 작용을 하고 있다. 이런 마을서사와 승화의 기제는 현대사회 속에서 새로운 관심의 대상이 되고 있는 이른바 ‘마을학’의 미래에도 중요한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to disclose the fact that, under the discretion that the quintessence of Seo Jeong-joo poetry in his 6th Poetry Collection, Myth of Jilmajae (1975) as well as containing the power to be referred to as ‘classic’, one of the important causes is fully retained in the village narrative and sublimation mechanism. Myth of Jilmajae paired with the earlier poetry collection of Seo Jeong-joo in Dongcheon to realize the quintessence of Seo Jeong-joo poetry in the aspect of principle and reality as well as theory and actuality. The village narrative and sublimation mechanism of innate within Myth of Jilmajae displays this point well, and furthermore, it looks at the reality of a village that began as a group of human survival in realistic ways to demonstrate the appearance of resolve issues and enhancing the same by the diversified and yet high level of spirit. When the village narrative within Myth of Jilmajae is classified for the standards in realistic issues, it is divided into disability narrative and disease narrative, livelihood narrative and living narrative, erotic narrative and marital narrative, and, education narrative and friendship narrative. The realistic issues here become the starting point of the narrative, and in turn, it is ultimately resolved and healed by the mechanism of sublimation in a way of bringing well-being and sustainability, growth and maturity for the entire village including the applicable parties. The structural characteristic contained in the village narrative of Myth of Jilmajae is that this both sides exist together within the narrative to make the multilateral relativity. Among them, the mechanism of sublimation in particular uses extremely outstanding level and method to lift up the structural aspect of the narrative as well as the entire contents into the great tension and consensus. The main mechanism of sublimation innate in Myth of Jilmajae is community consciousness and ethics consciousness, revered consciousness and mentality of humbleness, universe consciousness and non-boundary consciousness, world of inactive and unlimited consciousness, metaphysical faith and transcendental consciousness, and so forth. Such a mentality of village narrative and sublimation may provide important point of contemplation in the future for so-called ‘village studies’ that is the subject of interests within the contemporary society.
